Hope for Today's Problems

I wrote these chapters in an effort to help the many church members who have come to me for counsel from the Word of God. I found that I was covering the same material over and over again with one person after another. With that in mind, I decided to put in print the specific counsel I believed they needed and initially use that material as a handout to those with similar problems. This book is the product of that counsel and those handouts. As a result, these chapters are immensely practical. They provide specific 'how to' solutions to many serious problems. In doing that they give hope.

5Very helpful and practical  Oct 26, 2009
By G. Timms
"Hope for Today's Problems" is a very helpful book for anyone who needs help to deal with common problems of life. Many people are confused by the modern emphasis on drug therapy. While Dr. Bass does not discount the physiological (he worked with medical doctors) he understands that we are whole people - body and soul. The chapter on dealing with emotions in turmoil is worth the price of the book. Dr. Bass offers a very helpful definiton of emotions and how they "work". I highly recommend this book.

5Help from the "Wonderful Counselor's" playbook - the Bible  Oct 25, 2009
By Jim Stephenson

It's a good thing that the word "hope" is in the title, for that's the great benefit gained from this Bible-based advice. It's Dr. Bass' unswerving commitment to the Scriptures and the Christian faith that provides the value of this book.

Hope for Today's Problems extends a compassionate hand to those seeking reliable answers from the Bible. Serious help from God's Word may sting at first, and strike us as counter-intuitive, but it is ultimately the healing balm needed for problems that sin brings into our lives.

The book is filled with practical, applicable Scripture passages that provide divine help for the problems so many of us encounter. Hope is drawn from God's Word as it magnifies the mercy of God - a mercy found in grateful response to God's grace and sincere obedience to God's instructions.

The author deals with the physical and emotional effects of sin on the human body in an interesting and constructive fashion. Like King David of old, if the underlying cause of the physical condition is sin, we find healing in repentance.

I recommend that you buy and study this book. It will prove to be a source of healing and bring great hope!

1TOTALLY HOPELESS and ABUSIVE  Oct 04, 2007
By Ima Truthteller
I would NEVER recommend this book to anyone. If there is someone who is looking for hope this book would be the LAST place I would send them. I am a Christian and a counselor and I am ashamed that Mr. Ralph Bass claims to be the same. This book is totally abusive and destructive. For someone who is hurting and wounded, his words are like pouring salt into those wounds. He justifies his abuse by quoting scripture, but Satan did the same thing. Isn't it the same Bible that said, "For now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." I am not one to shy away from the reality of sin and the brokenness that the affect of sin has on all people; however I also believe that Jesus brings mercy and breaks the curse and condemnation when we trust in him.

I was also bothered that this book discredits medical and physical aspects in mental and emotional issues. He asserts that if someone is treated medically for depression, they are essentially sinning because they fail to admit their sin and are not trusting in God enough.

I just wanted to warn anyone who may have been contemplating a purchase. This book will only serve to wound you more and most certainly won't bring hope.

5A must-read for Christians with big or small problems  Jul 03, 2007
By David L. Card "reformer"
Actually, this review is by David L. Card's wife! This is a wonderful book - very simple and very timely. It is straightforward, and tells every Christian what they need to remember - that the Bible truly does hold the answers to all of life's problems. We need to be accountable to God, through His perfect word, and we need to submit to one another in love. A hard-hitting resource to help snuff out bad habits of all kinds by confessing them, THEN replacing them with disciplined godly behaviors that are practiced and practiced until they become the new habits. If you sense that something is wrong with your life (whether it's only the beginning of a downward slide or you are mired deep in sin), if you've been reading self-help books instead of your Bible, if everything you try doesn't work and you are slipping into despair - this book is for you. Get out your Bible, and use this book as a guide to look fully into the wonderful face of your Redeemer - face up to your sin, experience His forgiveness and start to implement His perfect guidelines for your life here on earth.
