5This book is THE source if you're helping parents or elders  Sep 23, 2009
By Michael T. McGaulley
After more than a decade of taking care of elderly parents, aging aunts, and cousins, I felt I was pretty well informed on the legal and practical ramifications. After I began reading How To Keep Your Parents Safe and Sound and Out of A Nursing HomeAND SOUND AND OUT OF A NURSING HOME I realized how much much more practical stuff there was to know. The author, Raymond Reiss, has spent 30 years running various types of elder care facilities and shares his knowledge. First, how to talk to your aging parents about sensitive issues like health care surrogates, powers of attorney, finances and the like. Factors to consider in choosing between stay-put at home versus retirement community, nursing facilities, and other housing options. If stay-at-home, deciding between hiring your own aides or working with an agency. Finding your way through the maze of Medicare, VA medical, and other federal and state programs.(The appendix of agency names and addresses in every state is a godsend in itself.) Caring from a distance. Bio-ethical and legal issues in caring for aging parents. Most interesting of all, how (and why) to put off a nursing home as long as possible. Bottom line: if you're taking care of, or will be taking care of, elderly parents, this is the best investment you can make. Second bottom line: if YOU are the aging parent, this is a great gift for your kids.

Very informative book with easy to follow checklists on how to talk with a parent about aging issues and finances, various residential housing options, different institutional housing options, federal and state programs, finding resources to pay for care and how to find different products and services.
