Setting the Bar for New CEOs and Boards of Directors in Today's Changing Environment Nov 29, 2009
By Thomas M. Loarie Former Kodak executive, professional board director, and author, Martin Coyne II has written a great guide for first time CEOs and for those about to be initiated into the ritual of board membership. "How to Manage Your Board..." distills Coyne's knowledge and observations down to the essentials needed for anyone navigating today's board issues and governance processes in the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) era. His lessons will be most helpful to the first-time CEO to "jump-start his/her relationship with his/her board" as well as to others who aspire to a CEO or board role. The book will also serve as an excellent reference for even the most hardened of board members.
"How to Manage Your Board..." is organized around the essentials for a good fast-start: Board governance (the SOX environment, the planning cycle, risk management, standing committees); developing the plan (and managing tensions that emerge); improving and maintaining the board relationship (focus, and key questions for reflection). Despite all of this content, "How to Manage Your Board..." checks in at 100 pages making it a fast and easy read for even the busiest executive.
Coyne also provides wisdom key to success in managing the board including, but not limited to a how one relates to the board, the amount of time invested in board relations, the need for a healthy respective of the board's role, one's operating style, and five principles which form the foundation for the book. They include: 1. Understanding the board's focus and expectations. 2. Providing timely, accurate, and relevant information to directors. 3. Establishing effective two-way communication with the board and individual directors. 4. Developing a robust, continual personal assessment and feedback process. 5. Using continuing change as an opportunity to enhance your board and board relationship.
Coyne's book can set the bar for new CEOs and any company's board. Smart CEOs will provide this as a board handout to all directors and to future board additions The book provides an excellent working framework for all who involved in the serious business of balancing the needs and expectations of an organization's stakeholders and the continually changing legal and regulatory environment.

How to Manage Your Board While Your Board Manages You Nov 11, 2009
By Jeff Bolke As a 10-year member of various executive management committees, this books gives the reader a new but concise look at the key relationships between one's boss, the CEO, and the board. It breaks down the issues, agendas, complexities and challenges to help any executive manage the process better and help make the CEO and the company more successful. It does not waste time with anecdotes for the sake of filling pages, but it covers the topics in sufficient detail to help any executive rethink and perhaps change how he/she approaches a given topic. A must read in today's business environment.

Staright forward Nov 11, 2009
By J. Hancock In such an easy to read, yet content rich book, Mr Coyne has gone straight to the core of what is required to build a lasting, highly functional relationship between a board and a CEO. It focuses on the "what" and the how to develop such an important relationship(s). While tailored to the rigors of a public company the lessons outlined are invaluable to both public and private board/ceo relationships. First class.

Achieving Excellence Inside The Boardrrom Nov 10, 2009
By Mark W. Sickles In "How To Manage Your Board While Your Board Manages You", author Martin Coyne has provided business leaders with an insightful, valuable, and timely blueprint for achieving long-term success through effective board-management relations. The profound implications of the book's title are solidly reinforced by a list of fundamental principles for effective board relationships, a detailed description of the roles and responsibilities of the board, and two sets of questions addressing key areas of board focus, and implementation of the fundamental principles. The book is creatively written from the CEO point of view, which adds to its impact as a framework and process for working effectively with the board. It should be required reading for anyone who works inside the boardroom. I recommend that all directors consider providing copies to their CEOs - after reading it themselves!

Boardroom interaction Nov 09, 2009
By John Chimento HOW TO MANAGE YOUR BOARD WHILE YOUR BOARD MANAGES YOU is a quick read. Mr. Coyne brings a well thought out approach to a new Chairman dealing with his new Board from there first meeting forward. He lays out a systematic approach to follow with thoughtful questions to keep the Chairman and his Board on the same page from day one. In this ligitious society we live in today any new Chairman of a public company would be well served to spend the 60 minutes to read this book and take from Mr. Coyne's vast experience, he has gained as a director of publicly traded companies. It would be time well spent.
