By gnemmi If you know _nothing_ about vi/vim, then: sure, this book should be the first on your list on "vi/vim books to buy".
It'will get you up and running in no time, and that means you'll be able to use vi/vim in a reasonably proficient way in less than 30 pages ...
Even if you _do_ know your way around vi/vim but your skills are between basic and something more, this books is still for you. This book might make the difference between knowing how to use vi/vim and knowing how to use vi/vim _proficiently_, and that's the strenght of it.
It doesn't cover all the bases, but it's not inteded to. So, it actually does, what it supposed to do.
If, after reading this book, you happen to need a deepest and more complete understandign of vi/vim full power, complete features and it's ins and outs, then go for "Learning the vi and Vim Editors, 7 edition (July 21, 2008)" by O'Reilly Media, Inc.; which actually _is_ intended to cover all the bases and beyond.
AS for "How To Use the UNIX-LINUX vi Text Editor: Tips, Tricks, and Techniques (And Tutorials Too!) by Larry Smith", it achives it's goal: after reading it, you'll be able to use vi/vim comfortably and you'll feel confident on what you are doing.
As stated by the author: no 'geek-speak' on this one.
It doesn't get any better than this for $14.99 and the book is clear, concise, easy to follow and small enough as to carry it around with you all the time so you can quickly resort to it if doubts or second thoughts show up when you least expect them.
One thing though ... it's a $14.99 kind of book ... so do not expect any fancy binding, paper or fonts .. but, in all honestly, that's the last important thing .. and, personally, I found the kind of "console terminal" font used throughout the book, not only nice, but also comforting and natural for a book that aims at the "I know you spend a lot of time typing on terminal" kind of reader.
Last note: if you've been usign vi/vim on a daily basis for the last year or two .. forget about this book ... is not written with your needs in mind.
Regards

EASY TO UNDERSTAND Nov 16, 2006
By Computer_Geek This book is easy to understand, easy to use, and easy to learn from. There are tutorials for the absolute beginner as well as tips for experienced users. I also own the O'Reilly book (Learning the vi Editor (by Lamb and Robbins), which is good; I prefer this one.
