Grapes and Gossip Sep 20, 2009
By T. Cromartie Block's How to Gossip Nicely is a fascinating and lighthearted anthropological commentary on Southern culture. A.B. Moore's clever, detailed drawings add to the humor of the work. Some of Betty Baird Rusher's recipes fittingly call for native Southern grapes and run the gamut from sweet to savory, beverage to main course. Just when you think you have found a possible predictability in her prose, Block mentions the backside of a waiter. Her section on eccentrics was my personal favorite and showcases her poetic abilities. It is obvious that Miss Block has spent some time in the South and, perhaps, been a fly on the wall.
