Beyond Plywood and Bottled Water - Gets Real about Hurricanes Aug 23, 2007
By Stephanie George As one who experienced the mildest effects of 4 hurricanes through the Sunshine State in 2004, I had the plywood and I had the bottled water. We actually even lost power for 8 hours during one of the storms - not a major issue. My experience with Hurricanes then did not really change my "plywood, batteries and bottled water - check!" attitude.
The next year Katrina hit - no, demolished - the town where my sister lived - Bay St. Louis, MS - and we all learned that no amount of plywood on her home and her neighbors' homes can hold out a storm of that violence. Katrina caught millions of people off guard.
This book is the REAL guide to hurricane storm preparation - or natural disaster preparation. And it's not as if storm prep has to occupy your lifestyle, you just have to have a plan that's more realistic than the checklist the newspaper publishes - or even more realistic than FEMA publishes.
It's not really about the hurricane - it's about the short time before and the very long time after the hurricane itself that you're planning for. Believe me, there's a lot more time AFTER the storm to be prepared for than for the few hours DURING the weather event.
Every Realtor and Property Insurance Representative in the Gulf Coast region should hand a copy of this book to every one of their customers.
The author is quite direct in his writing and presents very few specific personal anecdotes, but it is clear that he had a powerful personal experience with the subject matter. I would certainly want him as a neighbor!
Get this book now, even in the middle of hurricane season and share it with your neighbors; keep this book with your hurricane kit. You'll all be better off for it.
