True tales of life in 'de Islands Sep 28, 2009 I've known the author for several years, and can vouch that her hilarious tales of life in the Virgin Islands (US and British) are, however improbable it seems, firmly grounded in her experiences. I'd rate her writing up there with the best humorous travel writers. I saw her "Traffic Lights" re-created this August as St. John got it's first traffic light, complete with an uniformed officer to make sure drivers understood the correct the correct procedures! I enjoyed chatting with two St. John citizens about "Pirates in Paradise," the tale of the fatally failed fast food chain in Cruz Bay. Their comment was "'Dat lady sure got that tale right!" Dear Miss Mermaid is almost finished with her next book, I can hardly wait to see which stories from her life show up. In the interim, if you enjoy her tales, check her out at [...], and especially her additional blog that includes her hilarious, but scary, 23 days in Peebles Hospital in Tortola this summer. It seems that whereever the Mermaid is, strange things happen, unique people appear, and she has the presence of mind to write them down in a way that makes them absurdly funny. Buy this book!

Pour yourself some rum and relax Sep 04, 2009 Great collection of stories which are told as if you're hanging around with newfound friends, swapping tales over a cold drink in a warm climate. (I want to buy about 20 copies for friends and family so they can get the feel of the Virgin Islands without the expense of a visit.)

Interesting and informative Jul 18, 2009 I have read Miss Mermaids new book and for anyone who is planning on visiting the Caribbean I recommend they read this book before they go. Having been born in Barbados the islands are very similar in their outlook and customs. I really enjoyed this book and it brought back many happy memories. Good work Miss Mermaid and I can't wait for your next one

Having lived on St. John and Tortola Jun 19, 2009 My first move to St. John from NC was in 1992, second in 1998 and third to Tortola in 2000. Needless to say I can't stay away but find it difficult to live there as well. I go back to visit often though and am always reading various blogs and checking out de web cams. I loved this book and the connection it gave me to those wonderful times and people. Thank you Miss Mermaid. I read your column daily and thank you for providing me with the news of my island homes.
