Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever: A Novel

The story takes place in Northern California, in the spring of 2000, when the dot-com boom was at its peak. Elizabeth Reilly-Hayden is a successful executive in her late fifties and a divorced mother of two. Emotionally armored and living alone, she wants only to maintain the status quo: her long-term significant other, her job, and her trusted friends-five feisty women whose high school friendship has carried them through multiple marriages, dramatic divorces, and maddening menopause. Yet in a matter of days, the three anchors that have kept her moored are ripped away. The group of lifelong pals gathers at Lake Tahoe to attend to the funeral arrangements of their beloved friend and tries to unravel the mystery of her death. Through their shared tragedy, Elizabeth learns how disappointment and grief can bloom into healing and hope.

5A Man's Point of View  Oct 12, 2009
By D. Waring
My wife talked about this book so much that I read it. I was impressed by the story and the quality of the writing; I got hooked and read it in two sittings. On the serious side, 'Husbands May Come and Go but Friends Are Forever' gave me insight about the trials and tribulations women face when trying to 'have it all'. But this author must also be a comedienne - her characters and their escapades made me laugh out loud. I recommend it to any men who want insight of why women's friendships are so important to them.

4The Pleasure of their company  Dec 10, 2010
By JoanJ
It was a pleasure to have the company of Judith's "gang". Being older than her friends, I was married (and still am) when women were not encouraged to keep such close friendships apart from their spouses. We had our "gang" of married couples and when a divorce occurred, the singles were more or less stranded. If I had been divorced, I would have loved to have found a group like the one Judith has created in this book. She incorporates both humor and sadness to bring us the story of these women and I thank her for the good read.

5Intimate Circle of Friends  Nov 29, 2010
By Peggy Kennedy
Reading this book made me feel as though the author had wrapped her arm round my shoulder, handed me a glass of delicious wine, and ushered me in to a living room full of funny, warm and eccentric friends. Judith Marshall's writing is crisp and engaging and her characters, whose friendships endure everything from teenage angst to infidelity, divorce and death, are at times so real that they seem to walk off the page. I laughed out loud several times at lines like "I wasn't sure what a training bra was for, but I sure hoped it trained my boobs to look like Karen's," and "(Arlene) looked as though she'd been pulled through a hedge backwards." Ultimately, "Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever" is the story of how friendships expand our compassion and lend meaning to our lives. A terrific book for book clubs!

5Husbands May Come & Go but Friends Are Forever  Jun 15, 2010

What a great read! Having fun growing up and remaining friends through adulthood. I konw these women! I like the writing style, quick, crisp dialog and short chapters, moves the story along. Like Steel Magnolias & Ya Ya Sisterhood, you want to have these women as friends. More please.

5Don't Miss This Book !!!  Aug 28, 2010
By J. Bloom
I just couldn't put this book down!

Judith Marshall has given us a poignant, but enormously humorous view of the celebration of the friendship of six women in a most unforgettable novel. Marshall's characters jump out of the book as people you know, and their shared lifetime of trials and triumphs mirror those that we have all faced. What set's Marshall's writing above the rest is her ability to use description masterfully, enabling the reader to feel like an invisible character observing the plot firsthand. Three cheers for Judith Marshall's debut novel; it's fast paced, dialog rich plot will have you wishing for a sequel.
