I Guess I Won't Be Having Lunch In Volcan Anymore: My Adventures In Panama

A journal of the experiences of a retired American who moves to the Highlands of Panama to start a new life. He did his research and found that Panama is a very inexpensive place to live and has great people. Everything is fine in the beginning as he roams the countryside, makes friends with the locals, eats lunch daily at favorite cafes, volunteers at the doggie sterilization clinic, and buys a run-down house to fix up. But things begin to unravel when he opens a restaurant and finds his new business partners to have mercurial and vindictive personalities. Then his new real estate venture partner turns out to have a dark side, which forces their first real estate deal to fall through at the last minute, an ugly incident for all involved. In the end he leaves Panama a depressed and lonely man being hounded by a screwball Canadian expat who, while trying to buy his partially remodeled house, becomes involved with his ex-business partners in an outlandish scheme to have him arrested on totally fabricated charges. The true story of one retirees' adventures in the fast changing expat haven of Panama.

1Bad writing, bad story  Apr 18, 2009
I bought this book as I had just returned from Panama and thought it would be interesting to read some travel literature on the country. Wow, did I make a mistake.

Watch out! This is a self-published first hand account of Panama; it's been a long time since I've read a book that wasn't professionally written and editing. This book doesn't really have a plot or tell much about the country, other than the price of cheap food. (The author is obsessed with a $2 lunch) It's all about a guy who travels and sets up different restaurants and tells us all about how he wants to 'correct' their culture and how different people screw him over. It's more like a book you would write if you were a teenager and trying to get even with someone who treated you poorly. I have no doubt the author will try to write me in all caps and tell me what an idiotic review this is - that's exactly the kind of person who would write this book. Luckily it was only 100 pages in large type.

On the plus side, it does make you appreciate well written, thought-out, and plot driven books - and how hard it must be to get professionaly published today. Keep an eye out for Booksurge self-published books, which evidently is Amazon's publishing arm.
