5Moral issues in a novel of suspense  Nov 03, 2008
By Maggie
I really enjoyed this novel -- first for the suspense of the story and the scenery of Windemere Island which is like Mackinac Island (an area I love -- we've been visiting the island since I was a child) -- but by the end it was the fact that it was also a novel that made me think! Issues revolving around the sanctity of human life and how to best honor life are so in the forefront of our minds these days as we are faced with cloning, stem-cell research, genetic testing and so many other moral issues that all these advancements in science bring about. This novel really made me consider many of these issues in a way I hadn't really before -- from a very human perspective rather than all the news and political hype we get all the time. It was an enjoyable read all the way around and I highly recommend it!

5A Great Page Turner!  Nov 19, 2008
By Flora Balog
Mystery, incredible descriptive imagery, a sense of urgency - Jeanene Cooper weaves a masterful tale. What's not to love? Bravo!

5Suspense and Intrigue  Oct 31, 2008
By Janna Lee Heidenreich "day nurse"
This novel has intrigue that builds with every turn of a page. I love the characters and the majesty of Northern Michigan that are described. It flows nicely and you find yourself in the real life drama of the story. It also leaves you wondering how to justify some of the moral issues that the advancements of science have produced. May you may find answers to some of life's moral dilemma's.

1Not a good choice  Sep 27, 2009
By Mary
Before I read this book I checked out a few reviews. They were all postive. "Suspense", "Drama"' and "a novel that makes you think", were just a few. Well I think it was the worst book I ever read and it was very difficult to finish. The book is in need of much editing. The story goes off in too many different directions. It was boring and not well written. I am still wondering what was so wonderful and why anyone would think that it is great.

4entertaining and thought provoking  Dec 23, 2008
By Chelsi Utsler
The story woven so eloquently by Jeanene Cooper about Carly and the events that transpire on Windemere, ficitious sister island to Mackinac Island, is entertaining but also taps into a bigger picture of life, the value we place on it, and the lengths we'll go to protect it. The beauty of this book, in my opinion, is its layers - like an onion, as Shrek and Donkey would say! It's great for its imagary, plot, descriptive setting, and character interactions, but it also contains some very real and very touching themes that essentially question what it is to be human and how it is that we manage our compassion, our knowledge, and our emotions. A good read for when you're all bundled up in the winter or for traveling! I couldn't put it down!
