Ilobola: (The Marriage Fee)

The story originates in Mozambique and spans a time period from the early forties to the late sixties. It revolves around the lives of two characters. Gone are the days when ivory and cattle could be used to barter for a bride. The story characterizes the lives of black and white folk thrown together during this time period, when so many changes were taking place it is story is humorous, sad and sometimes tragic. Although this tale is fictional, the author has based it on people he has met, worked with as well as his own personal experiences growing up in this time period in Southern Africa.

5Ilobola: Recommended Highly!  Nov 03, 2009
By Davis King "Avid Reader"
What a wonderful Story!
Brought to life by an author who weaves a story fabric so interesting and intense that you can't put it down. It's a love story; but more than that the author writes about the history of South Africa and surrounding countries with - what must be - first-hand knowledge and experiences. His research must have been formidable. From the folk tales of the poor farm communities of ancient civilizatons to the modern facts about apartheid, mines and public works construction projects, the novel is very compelling.
Whether you know something about South African history or not, READ IT!

I thoroughly enjoyed Ilobola. Its a quick read but with lots of information about a time and place few Americans know . The author has excellentt knowledge of time and place! The story is woven together extremely well with plenty of twists and turns. Certainly would make a good book for discussion!

5MUST READ!  Nov 21, 2009
By Citi "M.LAMBERT"
I highly recommend the novel ILOBOLA, by Terry Francis. The story is fast-paced and informative, covering three decades in the countries of Mozambique, South Africa, and Rhodesia. The characters and their dilemmas are so compelling that I zipped right through the book. Whether in the sleepy village, the gold mines, or the tea plantations, the pace never slackens. Terry's story allowed me a greater appreciation for the culture, politics, and realities of Southern Africa from the 1940's to the 1960's. This is a must read!

5Wonderful Novel  Oct 26, 2009
By A. Lambert
I really enjoyed reading Ilobola. The combination of historical fiction with an incredibly intriguing story line made it very hard to put this book down. I learned a lot about southern Africa but it also made me contemplate the way our individual purposes in life can lead to such distinct and valuable experiences. I highly recommend this novel.

4Captivating novel  Oct 17, 2009
By Luvreading "Dogman"
Although this is a novel, at times I thought I was reading a true story of this young man from Mozambique who is searching for his place in life.
