2This is a tiny book  Apr 08, 2008
By Joel W. Wolski "jwski"
A few things are important to know before purchasing this book.
1) It is very small. Only 44 pages measuring less than 8 x 10.
2) It is self published. While this is not necessarily a bad thing (I have read some very well put together self published books. Digital Nature Photography: Use Any Digital Camera to Take Spectacular Nature Photographs is an excellent example of just such a book.), the print quality suffers greatly in this case. The whole thing looks to have been printed on an inkjet printer on a medium quality paper. I would assume that the quality of the photography is excellent, unfortunately it is impossible to be sure due to the lack of quality in the printing.
3) It is repetitive. It repeats itself a lot. It says the same thing over and over again. See how annoying that is? But at least I said the same thing in different ways. It appears that the author just cut-n-pasted verbatim what he had just said. With so few pages it would have been nice to not have so many of them wasted saying the same thing.
4) It is simplistic. As well as describing a simple approach to photoshop, it's described in a simple way. Now when i use the word simple I don't want it the be confused with the word easy. Think of the phase "simple minded" and you'll have a good idea what I mean. There is virtually no explanation. What explanation there is, is not accompanied by examples so in the absence of a thorough description, you're left with trying to figure out what he means and how to apply it to your own photography.
5) You receive no discount purchasing it through amazon. Being self published this is understandable.

All this being said, it was not a total loss. He did present some interesting ideas that I had not heard in the past. Unfortunately he did not present them in a way that is instantly applicable, but it has given me a place to begin my experimentation.

So was it a total waste? No (hence the 2 stars and not 1). Was it worth $19.99? Not even remotely. I would suspect that this same information could be gleaned from the author's web-site though I have not tested this theory.
