Action-packed Christian fiction...and more. Aug 24, 2009

"Sissy Bug!"
I enjoyed this work of Christian fiction as did my husband. It is a rousing, good action story but aspires to much more. At many points in the story, I found it to be both perceptive and often profound.
The story begins with a land already conquered from within by evil. An alien people have come to a land and corrupted its leaders until they are mere puppets, slaves to sin and vice. As can be expected, the story begins very darkly and the author does not shrink from portraying the evil and cruelty that exists where spiritual wickedness prevail. For this reason, it would not be suitable for young children.
In this fictional land conquered by evil, a single warrior still fights the "Darkness", waging a one-man war against the servants of evil. Without spoiling anything, he is called upon to take a "treasure" to the safety of a land still free of "Darkness".
To my surprise, the main character is neither "Prince Charming" nor the plucky youngster who saves the day. Instead, Thandor is an older, battle scarred veteran of a thousand combats who has fought for many years, never surrendering to evil, and has paid a price for his resistance. I thought this was an appropriate metaphor for the Christian life and the trials we must face for our beliefs.
Thandor, the hero of the story, is a brutal, unstoppable killer who slices and dices baddies with great skill and efficiency. I passed this on to my husband to read and he thought he could detect a martial arts background or familiarity on the part of the author. Men will definitely like this.
More than simply a killing machine, he has the ability to show compassion and kindness. He is not perfect and somtimes does the right things for the wrong reasons as well as needing gentle prodding in the right direction at times. He also has a certain vulnerability and human weakness. At one point in the story, he questions the morality of the violence he must commit and there is a discussion of the concept of "just war."
Magical elements in the story are firmly rooted in the source for both good and evil elements. I found the magical servants of "The Creator" to be written wellwith an ancient mystery about them. The wizard and bears provide needed comic relief.
Christian themes and messages abound. The central theme is submitting to God's will for our lives, surrendering to Him and becoming His servant. There is romance and, rather than focusing on the sensual as in secular literature, the book focuses on feelings, emotion and the other things that encompass true love such as self-sacrifice, selflessness and faithfulness.
This is a good, independent (obviously self-published) novel that many will enjoy. It is very masculine and I suspect men will enjoy it more. Even so, I enjoyed it immensely and reccommend it to men and women alike. A good read!
