In Spite of it ALL

In Spite of it all is an inspirational autobiography of an ordinary everyman who overcame the obstacles of war in Vietnam, recieved a disabling wound and survived life threatening illnesses to not only cope with life but to celebrate it. The odyssey begins with life and death battles in the jungles of Vietnam from a first hand point of view. The journey continues through hospitals, rehabilitation and assimilation back into a civilized society. It also depicts the planning and success of the "Chicago Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Parade", The largest parade of its kind in history which drew over 200,000 marchers and over 300,000 spectators in Chicago on June 13th, 1986. The book is filled with references to the turbulent 1960's and displays seldom seen photographs of the historic parade in Chicago.

5Great read!  Jul 10, 2008
By Bailey's Mom
This was a great read...a very interesting account of chuck's life from "the Nam" to the welcome home parade. He details first hand what it was like for a marine grunt to be in the war and explains his views/perspective of that time. He also gives a good deal of his personal story to help the reader get a real sense of who he is and why he is the way he is...quite engrossing and amazing to read about from one who was born a year after his tour of duty. I definitely recommend this book.

5An easy read with a strong message  Jan 30, 2009
By W. M. Olson
Mr. Lofrano, a common man -yet American hero, writes this book not aimed at pleasing a target audience but, for his own catharsis, that of his family and every veteran who shared the thinnest slice of his experience once 'back to the world'. His writing is simple, honest and his message is strong -serving one's country and people is noble regardless of color, creed, gender or rank. Charles's experience in Vietnam and after returning to the states reflects the "miss" in the collective national philosophy of the time -that, while debating the merits of the controversial war, we should still maintain a common respect for the PEOPLE who served in it. The freedom to disagree with the ideologies that lead to the war -any war, is the exact principle that he and every patriot have been asked to commit to, many have fought for and some, died for.

His story in the decades thereafter demonstrate his constitution as a man still committed to the same principles engrained in him by his family, while growing up on the Southside of Chicago, through his 'coming of age' in and immediately after the war that, to many, mirrors the current war in Iraq. His challenges, actions and character, In Spite of it All, will encourage anyone who reads his story.

Regardless of your generation or gender, this story offers some every day humor, an honest perspective, inspiration and motivation to maintain your personal integrity, regardless of the course that your life takes.

5Program Chairman for the WELCOME HOME PARADE in '86  Dec 26, 2008
By Roger
I know Chuck LoFrano from the Chicago WELCOME HOME PARADE in June of 1986.
Chuck and his brother in law worked on this parade and did an awful lot for the entertainment we had in Grant Park after the Parade March.

I was the Program Chairman for the parade, and it took us a year to get everything in proper place, working with the City of Chicago, and Special Events - a Department in the City of Chicago to put this Parade on. There were 176,000 Vietnam Veterans that marched in it, and 500,000 cheered us on as we came down LaSalle Street, from over at Navy Pier where we started. Then down LaSalle Street to Jackson, and then over to Grant Park the Band Shell.

Can't wait to read this book. Chuck thanks for writting this book, and for helping us with the events of that day. Actually the events lasted three days, Friday June 13th, 1986 the Parade, Saturday and Sunday there were events also, a POW/MIA ceremony on Saturday morning at the Daley Civic Center, and a Memorial Service on Sunday.

I read the book in one day - Chuck was right on Target with all he said in the book, also gives a very good insight as to what Vietnam Veterans are really all about. Like our forefather's - soldier's, husbands, father's and grandfather's now. Very insightful as to what the life of a grunt in Vietam was on a daily basis, even though Chuck was a Marine, the same is true for all Grunts that served, as well as many other Vietnam Veteran's that had to do many different things during their tour of duty. The book talks about family, being wounded and the suffering, raising a family, and then the WELCOME HOME PARADE and how it all started here in Chicago. Easy reading and a must for Vietnam Veterans' their families, and future generations.

5Very touching  Nov 02, 2008
By SNI
As a woman in her late thirties, I do not have my my own memories of the Vietnam War. All I know of this war is what I have heard and read. This is a great and moving account of one man's experience in the war and his his experiences in his post-war world. Congratulations to Mr. Lofrano for making it against the odds---both emotionally and physically!

5Deja Vu (All Over Again........)  Sep 05, 2008

As one who was stationed close to the area Chuck talks about, and one who met him after the Chicago Parade, I can tell you that this book tells it, and tells it right.....
