5A Catholic School kid survives abuse using his own integrity and baseball  Jul 21, 2008
I LOVED this book! Poignant and laugh out loud funny at the same time. I read the book on a bus and everyone around kept asking what I was reading as I couldn't stop chuckling. Kudos to Brian Dillon. I can't wait to see more from this author.

4Nice Work  May 11, 2008
Just finished 'Infallible' by Brian Dillon. I enjoyed the playful and mischievous protagonist that is a 10 year old boy in a whole heap of trouble at home, school, church and on the baseball diamond. Nothing is easy for this kid, but he perseveres in a such a way that one can only cheer him on. It's a very difficult topic to embrace (the Catholic Church's problems with pedophile priests), but I really enjoyed this author's take on an awful subject. You have to keep reminding yourself that it's a ten year old boy who is obsessed with baseball and is simply trying to play a boy's game with all these adult burdens. This author does extremely well maintaining that theme throughout this novel, but to appreciate it fully is to appreciate the mind of a 10 year old boy and looking at those burdens from his point of view and not bringing in one's own biases and emotions.
There are some odd tangents (short and forgettable) scattered throughout and it could have used another run through the editors for a final polishing, but I must say, it is a wonderful story about a boy who loves baseball who must dodge the sins of the Church, his parents, his teachers and the bullies to play a little fast pitch with the kids in the neighborhood. It's not preachy and avoids wallowing in self pity making this extremely readable. It's a quick read too for the Summer tanning season.
