Most interesting read Apr 15, 2008
By Armchair Interviews Thoughts, emotions, actions, and the consequences that follow them are the subject of this intriguing study of human nature. Using the Ceiba tree, which was known in ancient Mayan culture as "The Tree of Life," Dr. Trapp draws parallels between the flow of events from thoughts to behaviors with the tree from crown to root.
Dr. Trapp compares the four basic behavior types of people and explains how each of these can transform into an innumerable variety of personalities dependant upon culture, age, gender, education, and life experiences. She then discusses ways that individuals can correct or change their behaviors by examining their thought processes, thereby creating a life legacy that they will be proud of.
Of special interest was the information on how to recognize stressors and use stressful circumstances to increase creativity and performance. Examples of how to work through major life losses by properly managing time, stress, and change may be useful to many readers in today's high-pressure world. Sections on improving communication skills and reflecting upon one's own behaviors are aimed at improving relationships and creating desirable consequences.
Dr. Trapp also examines the benefits of having family, friends and mentors in a person's life to help them have needed support and shape their life experiences.
By using real-life examples of situations and circumstances from her own experiences and the lives of others, Dr. Trapp presents her information in a fascinating and engaging format. Self-examination tools in the form of simple questions help the reader to determine what areas of their life or behaviors they would like to change. The author also provides a short worksheet in chapter 4 so that readers can write down their goals, objectives, and the obstacles that are in their way.
Armchair Interview says: Easy to read and understand, this book is excellent for the layperson and clinician alike.

Full of information and insight Mar 30, 2008
By Karen Blomain Full of information and insight, INTENTIONAL LIVING combines insight with strategy. While most self-help books seem lightweight and academic books too ponderous, Dr, Trapp has successfully bridged the gap between the two. In this cogent, thoughtful, and highly informative book, she deals with the daunting and complex issues of behavior, motivation, and change--with a focus on helping the reader understand the practical applications of her advice. Containing clarifying examples, reference to other authorities, rich anecdotes and scriptural references, this practical, readable and, most importantly, wise book moves the reader to a greater knowledge of human dynamics. As a writer and life-long journal keeper, I especially love the self-questions posed throughout the book and found myself reaching for a pen.

Crystal-clear guide to why we get the consequences we do in our lives. It all starts with our thoughts (the crown in the Tree of Life model), so learning to think a little differently will result in much more satisfactory consequences. We can prevent "emotional hijacking", misunderstandings, even unnecessary conflicts, by following these simple strategies for taking charge of our thoughts, and in sequence, our emotions, behaviors, and consequences. The roots are our source of stability and nourishment- faith, family and friends. Even the thorns of the tree have their uses, to protect our vulnerabilities. With the skills taught here, we'll reap the fruit we want- our legacy from a life well-lived.
