Intimate Egypt: Dennis Forbes Photography, Book One

Following in the tradition of pioneering 19th Century photographers Frith, Du Camp, Beato et al., this first volume of Dennis Forbes’s large-format series of dramatic black-and-white photo images of Egypt’s ancient monuments focuses on major sites in Lower Egypt — beginning with Alexandria and Tanis in the Delta, moving on to the great pyramids, the Sphinx and tombs at the Giza Plateau and then to Cairo (including the Egyptian Museum), followed by Memphis and the Step Pyramid Complex and several mastaba cemeteries of Sakkara, plus the pyramids at Abusir, Dahshur and Meidum. Many of the 312 stunningly detailed images are full page.

5Ancient Egypt Superbly Captured In Black & White  Nov 20, 2010
By D. Carr "avid reader"
Tired of looking at the same color photos of ancient Egypt (be they excellent as many are or small and dark)? Dennis Forbes, author of two previous books on ancient Egypt (Tombs.Treasures.Mummies: Seven Great Discoveries of Egyptian Archaeology (1998) and Imperial Lives: Illustrated Biographies of Significant New Kingdom Egyptians, Volume One (2005) has embarked on an ambitious series of softcover volumes of black & white photos of ancient Egypt's principal monuments. His annual trips to Egypt in the 1990s were primarily for the purpose of photographing monuments for the magazine he created in 1990, Kmt: A Modern Journal of Ancient Egypt (appearing only in black & white in its early years) for which he has served as Editorial Director since its inception. As the Journal evolved to 4-color, Forbes began shooting color transparencies on later trips ending up with hundreds of images often due to using a "bracketing" technique, that is several exposures of the same view. During visits in 2006 and 07, he began shooting with a Nikkon 35mm digital camera allowing instant editing, thus avoiding duplication and wasting costly film. With this new technology, he was able to convert his hundreds of color images into high resolution black & white ones, resulting in a decision to publish them in a multi-volume format arranged by sites. This first volume covers Alexandria, Tanis, Giza, Cairo, the Egyptian Museum, Memphis, Sakkara, Abusir, Dahshur and Meidum. The wide range of photos (many of them full page) and Forbes's eye for detail is extraordinary. There is an introduction explaining how the process of converting the color images to black & white was accomplished and a brief description of the monuments covered. The book is highly recommended for the serious Egyptophile!
