disapointed Jan 19, 2008 I'm a Isshinryu practiitioner and was looking forward to learning things about my styles past. I was disapointed. The book has poor editing and lacks flow. some paragraphs reapeat what was said just above them. The author talks about how Isshinryu has become watered down but does not really address these differences. The author also talks says that Shimabuku helped train soldiers in the vietnam war, but does not talk about the martial training. I did enjoy the old pictures.
Overall I would recomend that if you want to purchace this book wait until a used copy comes available. Don't pay full price.

Accurate accounting with great pictures Jun 10, 2007 This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in Isshinryu Karate. The book provides ample text concerning the history of the matial art. The book explains the basis for much of the instruction that is handed down in a dojo. It is an excellent backup source for anyone who is already studying with a sensei. As a parent of two children who are advanced in their training it was especially helpful with the spelling and pronunciation of the terminology. I bought it for myself but some how I keep finding it in my children's rooms.
Entertaining Jan 17, 2007 I found this book on Isshinryu to be quite entertaining. Master Smith is nothing if not opinionated, and this comes out in his book. The historical sections of this book and the pictures are worth the price.

Unique book from a first generation student Jan 24, 2006 Shihan Smith (9th dan Isshinryu) is one of the few still living AND teaching first generation students of Tatsuo Shimabukuro (1908-1975), founder of Isshinryu Karate-do.
This is the only book written by one of the ten -real- first generation American students. An unique and historical valueable document.
First hand facts on the Original Isshinryu karate system. Not, like most of the available books on Isshinryu karate, from hearsay and/or second or third generation Isshinryu karateka.

First hand view Dec 10, 2005 Very informative in regards to background info about Isshinryu.A behind the scenes look at US milatary/goverment transitions in Okinawa in the development of martial arts training by first hands accounts.
The small detail showing light on todays falsehoods. (I.E. Gi snapping Pp12)The commerialism that has waterdown/diluted this style is evident with review of the past.
Great book for review by real Karateka that are not trying to make a dollar off Lil' Johnny parents.
Very informative and enjoyable reading.
