Honest Crossing Apr 20, 2010
By Grandpa Minor

When I read "Journey Across The Tiber," I wasn't looking to cross a river of any kind. So the crossing wasn't significant to me. What was, however, is the honest endeavor the author pursued all the way across. He had much to evaluate, having been a member (and preacher) in other churches. It's not often that one finds such controlled and dedicated soul searching about most issues--and certainly not about religion. The book's gold standard is the personal honesty of the author in all important respects, including: (1) his vast display of knowledge, (2) his long-term research efforts, (3) his religious trials in life, and (4) his consistent pursuit of a calling that propelled him over that symbolic bridge. While not agreeing with his decision, I hold him in high regard for heeding the call as he knew it, staying faithful to it, and abandoning all temptations that got in the way of completing that lengthy (and sometimes wrenching) spiritual journey. A good read of an honest human struggle to submit to a calling, no matter the cost--and to reap the rewards waiting for one who makes it to the other side.

Journey Across the Tiber: My Many Rooms is an inspiring account of the author's search for truth and journey to the Catholic Church. The book is an excellent source of information for those with questions regarding the Catholic Church as well as for those who have been in the Catholic Church for many years. I found the chapters on "Common Misunderstandings About Catholicism", the "Catholic Mass/Protestant Order of Worship", "Apostolic Fathers/Early Church Fathers", and "Current Theological Positions: Protestant/Catholic" to be very informative and helpful. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

I came across this book while researching Catholicism, and was astounded at the amount of information and reassurance it provided. This book is so many things at once: A memoir, a guide for those considering conversion, and a comprehensive history and analysis of this beautiful faith. I read this book at a time when I was questioning my own decision to explore becoming a Catholic, and was most pleased with how completely Mr. Minor dispells the many myths associated with this faith (that catholics are idol worshippers etc. etc.), the purposes and histories of many of the practices and rituals of the church are detailed as well. Overall a great read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Christian faith.
