Juanita in Blue Cookbook

Juanita In Blue Cookbook is a Great Depression era cookbook with authentic recipes of the day. The recipe collection is that of Juanita Widner Jervis who was a legendary chef and Restaurateur in central Indiana. Growing up in the 1930’s, Juanita was a farm wife and mother as well as a community leader, nurturing all she came in contact with throughout her life. As a business woman she owned and operated The Rainbow Café in central Indiana which was known for its gourmet pie recipes for nearly 20 years. The recipes (including restaurant quantity specialties) intertwined with vignettes of Juanita's beloved family and life events provide Depression-era recipes and glimpses into rural life in the twentieth century.

5This cookbook is a treasure!  Dec 14, 2008
By Rachel Bethman "Beth R."
This cookbook is an extensive collection of recipes and a wonderful history. If you are interested in creating a family remembrance, this is an excellent example to follow. It also provides unique recipes from eras of the past. Many people have shared their own reactions to the cherished cookbook:
* Bonnie C of Burlington who operates a pie shop has been seeking the `old fashioned cream pie' recipe which is included in Juanita In Blue Cookbook for several years. It has a secret ingredient. She found it in this recipe book!
* Bonita W, cousin of the subject of the book, is happy to find some family recipes including a few from the legendary Mommy Allen (Rosetta Shonk)!
* Lois A was dining room manager at the Rainbow and her daughter sought out the book for her.
* Christy remembers having a piece of pie everyday after school at the Rainbow as a special highlight of her day!
* Anna W's family worked at the Rainbow and wanted a copy as a legacy and keepsake. Fond memories of Juanita and Doyle!

This book is a five star! Enjoy it and savor the memories and perhaps the food as well! From Beth R.
