Just Pick Up The Pieces: An Autobiographical Novel

During the mid-nineteen forties in the historic town of St. Augustine, Florida, two young girls face the unspeakable tragedy of their mother's suicide. In the ensuing two years, their father's alcoholism prevents him from providing the stable environment his daughters need. Eleven-year-old Barbara, mature and sensible for her age, is forced to assume unrealistic responsibilities while coping with the problems that accompany adolescence. Joy is eight with a rebellious nature made worse by unresolved grief, hidden anger, and feelings of abandonment. The story unfolds to reveal how very differently Barbara and Joy react to the blows dealt them in their young lives. Through it all, these two sisters struggle, each in her own way, with resilience and perseverance and eventually arrive at a safe place that will, over time, provide them with the guidance and security they need.

5Life really does come at you fast...  Aug 23, 2007
A well-written, "can't put it down" account of an amazing story! The author conveys her warmth, strength, maturity, and faith in a very convincing way while dealing with an extremely difficult and in many ways tragic set of circumstances. To know how she overcame all and came out the person she is today is truly an inspiration! Great job, Barbara!

This was a very moving book. It will touch your heart to read of the lives these girls lived. It is not sad in the end, because it teaches them to perservere. Even though they handled their feelings differently, they grew from their experiences. These girls, Barbara and Joy are an inspiration and the book an inspiration to all who read it.

5A Great book for a discussion group of many ages.   Aug 23, 2006
Just Pick Up The Pieces is a heartwrenching and heartwarming "story" that is age appropriate for anyone. Yes, there are tears of sorrow and stressful experiences for both Joy and Barb, but Barb's wisdom, faith and hope radiates throughout. The girls seek comfort and courage in each other. This story illustrates so poignantly that our actions and reactions affect an entire family, radiating to future generations as well. I applaud both sisters for sharing their journey and facing the demons of life. Three cheers!!!
