Katorga

A dark and often hilarious science fiction novel drawn from a vein adjacent to Heinlein and Vonnegut, Katorga harshly reflects a reality reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy’s best fiction. Doug Bradley is an entirely average veterinarian hanging his shingle in the suburbs of the near future when he and thousands of other innocents are torn from their homes, branded as terrorists, and thrown through a doorway onto a barren and frozen world called Ceti Prime. The Warden of the colony issues simple orders to the prisoners at gunpoint: find a way to survive, or don't. Brimming with the maniacal humor of the hopelessly damned, Katorga sees Doug and his quite mad friends face the perils of an alien wasteland, the dangers of bored and sociopathic guards and the delicacies of purple cactus. Along the way, secrets of this new world lead Doug to the chance for both freedom and redemption.

3I've been reading, so  Jul 17, 2010

Been reading this book for over a year. Why can't I finish it? It might just be me - but seriously, I haven't made it past the 9th page. It's withering away on a table or a bookshelf and it might be the best book ever written, I have no idea. If I believed in god, I would ask it to grant me the patience to get on with this short little book - but I don't. What to do?

5Katorga is a great read!  Aug 05, 2009

This book really excited me. I found the story enthralling and fast paced. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next, so I read the whole book in one sitting.

The main character, who was suddenly and unjustly exiled to a gulag on another planet, is quite the way I see any one of us behaving in the same situation. He is nearly convinced of his guilt, then he in angry, and finally he accepts his situation and finds a way to survive.

In the end, the secrets he learns are unexpected to the reader. An excellent mix of science fiction and social/political commentary, "Katorga" is a wonderful first foray in the novel publishing world for Steven L. Wilson.

Personally, I think Solzhenitsyn himself would have liked this book.
