Saving the Magic Jan 22, 2009

Over the holidays, someone asked me the question "What do you remember about Christmas?" Looking back, I think many of us try to recapture the magic from our childhood - believing in Santa and the magic was the best - the only way we were able to re-experience that was sharing the myth with our own children. I told my 10-year-old daughter that if she didn't believe then Santa wouldn't come and she'd have no gifts!!! Smart girl that she was she played along with me!!!
This story offers an explanation to older children allowing them to hold on to the belief!
I love the vocabulary. We shouldn't 'talk down' to kids. The author doesn't oversimplify.
Keith Doodle deals with the issue of multiple Santas. I remember asking my mother how Santa could be at Federals Department Store and also at Montgomery Wards across the street at the same time.
Many 'Santa' traditions are mentioned and addressed.
I have a few special young friends who will receive a copy of Keith Doodle's story!

Had the illustrations not been so well done, and done by someone I really love, I may have felt a bit bitter paying nearly $20 for this book. The price is way over-inflated.
The story is so-so. Plucky little elf saves Christmas through art. Kind of reminds me of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer's misfit storyline, so I have to call it not-so-original in its ideas.
All in all, it was OK. Bear in mind it is a self-published work. And the printing quality isn't top-notch. And the story has its weaknesses. But the illustrations are warm and detailed and actually MAKE the book.
