Kessie's Tale: The Adventures of an African-American Slave Girl in South Carolina

The book,Kessie's Tales: The Adventures of an African-American Slave Girl in South Carolina, by Kitty Wilson-Evans and Lucinda R. Dunn with illustrations by Jason Curry, introduces youngsters (ages 9 & up) to a long neglected chapter in the history of enslaved Africans in America -- from a child's point of view. Written in the tradition of oral storytelling, this touching story carries young readers back into the early 19th century, into a time where African-Americans were slaves. Though serious in intent, this story has a lighthearted spirit that keeps youngsters, and even adults, eager for the next adventure. Based on the fictional character created by author Kitty Wilson-Evans, Kessie's Tales provides parents and teachers with a gentle way to help youngsters understand; get classroom discussions going about a painful era in American history and its repercussions for today.

Here is a real American Girl story that every kid should own that lives in this country. It is a great way to shed light on the darkest times of this nation, and help explain it to our youth. No bookshelf is complete without it.

Kessie's Tale is a beautifully written and illustrated collection of stories about a young slave girl. It is a realistic depiction of slavery from a child's perspective. It is a must read for parents, teachers and children.

5Wonderful Read !!  Apr 13, 2009

I love the book. The story is told through the eyes of a child who through her strength and innocence begs us to use our imagination to put ourselves in her place. That's what a good book does.

5Avva's review and comments about Kessie's Tales  Mar 25, 2009
By Avva Scott
The authors really help me to see and understand Kessie's life as a slave from the point of view of a child. Kessie really brought me into the center of her world from the mind of a child and the struggles she encountered as a little slave girl. The pictures was very colorful and they brought a greater meaning to the story. The illustrations was phenomenal and it help explains the history of slave life in such a way that not only children can appreciate and understand the way of life for a slave. This is a great book.
