Knuckle Down

After ten-year-old Hannah loses her father’s lucky boyhood marbles, bad things start to happen. Hannah’s not-quite-right little sister almost chokes to death on one of the marbles left behind, Daddy’s Liberty ship sails off to points unknown, and her mother has little time or energy to deal with the strife on the homefront. Unable to stay out of trouble for long, Hannah learns about love, death, and sacrifice as she struggles to find her place in a world at war. Resorting to petty crime, she boards the Red Car to the Long Beach Pike and an exciting new life away from the battles at home. She soon discovers, however, that bad luck can follow anywhere. When a telegram arrives from the warfront, fulfilling the prophecy of a fortuneteller, Hannah is determined to change her luck and salvage her family. Unfortunately, “girls don’t play marbles,” and she challenges the worst Hannah-banana boy on one of the darkest days in American history.

5A must read!  Dec 27, 2009
By K. Orloff "love to read"
A true page turner! What an excellent way for today's generation to learn how World War II affected the lives of everyday folks. And sure to be an enjoyable read for the generations who experienced it.
Fabulous book--not be missed!

5Knuckle Down  Feb 25, 2010
By Paul Crandall
I read Knuckle Down with my 12 year old daughter and together we laughed, cried, and couldn't wait to come back each night for more. It's gotten more and more difficult to find quality books that we BOTH enjoy reading together, and Knuckle Down was a pleasure. It gave us so much to talk about- relationships, sacrifice, loss, family, courage, coming of age themes.... And since Juliana has been studying WWII in school, the historical context was perfect. We've read most of MaryAnn Easley's books together and this was our favorite. Knuckle Down was a gift- we were sorry when we finished it up! We're looking forward to MaryAnn Easley's next book!

5Knuckle Down Introduces Compelling Young Heroine  Jul 29, 2010
By Diana J. Ewing
Knuckle Down may be written for the juvenile market, but it's a great read for adults as well. Easley tells a compelling story of life on the homefront during World War II. Not only is Hannah, the 10-year-old heroine and would-be marble champion, going through the usual growing pains, but she worries along with the rest of her family if her father will make it home after they get word that his ship has sunk. The skilled blend of dramatic and lighthearted moments endears readers of all ages to Hannah while providing insights for young readers into the realities of wartime life.

5Awesome story, characters and portrait of World War II era Los Angeles  Jun 06, 2010
By Sean Mahoney
I just finished Knuckle Down yesterday afternoon during my daughter's ortho appointment, tears streaming down my cheeks when ... Well, I don't want to spoil the ending but suffice to say I felt like I'd just finished one of the best right-of-passage/coming-of-age books I'd ever read. Along with the great story that made it one of those books that I couldn't wait to get back to, the author also did a wonderful job of painting a very authentic portrait of World War II era Los Angeles. This portrait, along with (the lead character) Hannah's journey, reminded me a lot of other classics like To Kill a Mockingbird or even Huckleberry Finn - Youth and Americana at its best! The reality of the War in the Pacific and how it must've felt for both those at war and those at home was also first-rate, expressing that part of American history far better than most history books do.

Young, old or middle-aged, I highly recommend this amazing, worthwhile and excellent book. It's definitely first on this summer's reading list for my 9 and 11 year-old girls.

I loved this story! Hanna captured my heart as she took me through her struggles of growing up during a time of war. I felt like I was living in the 40's with her true-to-life experiences. It was beautifully written, and a wonderful way for young folks to have a true understanding of that time in history.
