Great Techniques Book Jun 03, 2007
By Thomas B. Adam
"Bibliophile"
This is a great book of Korn Shell examples and techniques. However, to understand it, one would first have to have read a good book on Korn Shell syntax and programming. So, this is a second-book for new Korn Shell programmers, not a first book. This is a book that will take you from new/aspiring Korn Shell programmer to a polished/professional Korn Shell programmer. The only reason it does not get five (5) stars is because of no index.

"Real-world" examples with comments...just be ready to type them... Jul 16, 2010
By J. Sinclair I bought this book a few days ago (2008 revision). It is a book comprised of solid examples with clear commenting in them. Examples range from "Hello World" simplicity to creating a menu-driven interface for managing a contact database, and everything in between. The examples given are useful in real-world situations, or easily modifiable by the user to fit situations they are scripting against. In that aspect, the book's main purpose is to give the reader plenty of real-world examples to try out and learn from, and the book certainly delivers there.
The table of contents and index are marginally helpful. The material in the book is all sorted alphabetically by script name, so they're only useful for skimming. A topical index or topical set of contents would be more functional and helpful, especially to those looking to cut their teeth on some of the easier examples found in the book. The index was added for 2008, but you can tell it was basically an afterthought meant to appease those who were upset that it was missing. If you're looking for a script to solve a specific type of problem, you basically need to guess at the name of the script as the author would have created it.
The biggest issue with the book is that there are no digital resources. Every script and/or example must be typed to try it out. There is no companion CD, and the website referenced is nonexistent as of 7/18/2010 [...]. Having those available would help vault this book closer to the level of high necessity as a reference or training book for those learning to script. However, with these issues the book is merely useful, if overpriced for that value.

Poor typographic design makes it hard to read Dec 28, 2006
By Sam Vikers The book is written entirely in courier font with no variation in font size, bolding or any standard typographic conventions that make a book easier to read. While the examples appear to be complete, I can tell this is going to be a VERY difficult book for me to get value out of.
Full of errors and hard to read Feb 14, 2011
By Kevin Kelly I read the posts and agree with many there is good value to the book but not enough to warrant the price tag. This book is stated as something for the novice/newcomer but it misses the mark on that. There are lots of problems with the syntax and it would be helpful for a disclaimer of the system/systems he developed this on. The arrangement of scripts is not helpful..please by alphabet? Anyway, it isn't too bad as a paper weight.
You do not READ this book you TRY this book! Jun 19, 2009
By Randall Smith Many folks might complain about the "readability" of this book, but that mindset basically misses the approach taken with this book. It is not a read from start to end type of book.
We learn by doing and this book is entirely about "doing" - the details are explained as your read and run the scripts themselves.
If you actually need to acommplish real-world tasks in the Korn shell, this book becomes unrivaled!
Kind Regards,
Randall62
