You do not READ this book you TRY this book! Jun 19, 2009 Many folks might complain about the "readability" of this book, but that mindset basically misses the approach taken with this book. It is not a read from start to end type of book.
We learn by doing and this book is entirely about "doing" - the details are explained as your read and run the scripts themselves.
If you actually need to acommplish real-world tasks in the Korn shell, this book becomes unrivaled!
Kind Regards,

Great Techniques Book Jun 03, 2007 This is a great book of Korn Shell examples and techniques. However, to understand it, one would first have to have read a good book on Korn Shell syntax and programming. So, this is a second-book for new Korn Shell programmers, not a first book. This is a book that will take you from new/aspiring Korn Shell programmer to a polished/professional Korn Shell programmer. The only reason it does not get five (5) stars is because of no index.

Poor typographic design makes it hard to read Dec 29, 2006 The book is written entirely in courier font with no variation in font size, bolding or any standard typographic conventions that make a book easier to read. While the examples appear to be complete, I can tell this is going to be a VERY difficult book for me to get value out of.

Disappointed Dec 25, 2006 Asked for this book as a gift and was disappointed. It is an interesting idea, the Rosetta stone -- same examples in different languages. But I know shell programming well enough and was hoping for a book with information about ksh syntax and unique features. This book has none of that, just jumps straight into bad jokes and lots of examples. Unlike the various "cookbook" programming books, the examples are not grouped in any meaningful or helpful way -- they are listed alphabetically by name, which is as good as random.
The book is also printed entirely in monospace font, making it rather hard to read for me. I will be giving the book away and have already bought a different book on ksh with an Amazon gift certificate I also received.
