This is a book you don't want to miss. May 01, 2009
By Laurel This is a book you don't want to miss.
If you have ever miscarried, if you've ever lost a child to disease, if you've ever divorced, if you've ever struggled to raise a child alone, if you've ever worked hard to make a go of a small business, if you've ever dealt with a level of frustration and distress that's threatened to completely swamp you, if you've ever wondered whether there is purpose to life--or even if none of these things are true of you but you simply like a gripping read that combines humor and horror in approximately equal portions about life issues of fundamental importance--this is a book you'll be glad you picked up and opened the cover of.
Shirley Walston lost her daughter to cancer over 20 years ago and it's taken her till now to assimilate and write about the experience. The result is a stunningly thoughtful and well-written look at what it is to be faced with the necessity to make gut-wrenching decisions about life and death issues in the midst of normal everyday existence. How she manages to explain this with both sorrow and amazing good humor is one of the huge surprises and delights awaiting the reader of Kristal's Wedding. She faces her situation with a brutal, but at the same time inspirational, honesty and clear-sightedness that makes the reader alternately want to sob and stand up and cheer.
Faith is Shirley's answer to the dilemmas that face her, but not the cloying, what-a-friend-we-have-in-Jesus faith that never questions. This is a faith that takes its own sweet time to develop, a faith that has a lot of questions and has to overcome a lot of bad behavior and doubt. But once it takes hold, once it climbs to the summit of her soul and raises the flag--watch out! This is a faith that is absolutely fascinating to watch develop and to hear Shirley explain. If you've ever wondered who and what you are in relation to ultimate things . . . my very best advice to you is to buy this book, carve out a block of time in your busy schedule, pour yourself a cup of tea, sit in your favorite chair, let the answering machine take a message . . . and simply read.

Kristal's Wedding May 27, 2009
By Audra J. Baumgarth This true story drew me into every scene. I laughed, cried and identified. Kristal's Wedding gives insight into God's personal responses and provisions in times of need. Humor is woven into a tender, sensitive testimony of God's faithfulness through divorce, single parenthood and devastating loss. I'm certain this compelling, beautiful message will give hope to many. M. Chapman May 25, 2009

"Megan Joy Chapman, author of Lion Heart & Alessio: The Victory Ride"
Heartbreaking. Beautiful. Funny. Honest. Kristal's Wedding was all this and more. I read it in two sittings because i couldn't put it down. I will be recommending this book for a long time to come... to my sister who recently lost her 12-year-old child unexpectedly, to anyone in need of encouragement, or to someone (like myself) who just needs a reality check when times get tough. Thank you, Shirley for pouring out your heart and introducing us to Kristal, your "stand-up" amazing daughter.

"Seat-belt faith" triumphs May 04, 2009
By Sandra Tompkins What an inspiring true story! I will never forget the profound image of this heart-broken single mom, whose 16-year-old daughter is dying of leukemia, slamming on the brakes to let the seat belt "catch" her so she can sense God's arms around her, holding her, comforting her. . .while she has a good cry. That "seat-belt faith" reminds me that He loves her (and me!) and that He will never leave her (nor me!)
Walston opens her heart, mind and spirit through the pages of Kristal's Wedding. She tells it like it is, and sometimes it's raw, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic. She shows us that we can trust God even when we can't see Him. Best of all, we discover that He loves us even when He doesn't answer our prayers the way we hoped He would.
