La Befana: An Italian Night After Christmas

A poetic adaptation of the tradition of La Befana, and the Italian Epiphany celebration. La Befana is an old woman who hears of the birth of Christ from several visitors who knock on her door late at night looking for supplies and directions to the new "child king". She sends them away, preferring to be left to her cleaning, but then she sees the star in the heavens and has a change of heart. It starts her on a quest and she begins delivering gifts to the children she passes as she searches for the Christ child.

My daughter loves this book. We've read it several times since we got it. It is a really great story and the pictures are dynamite! I'd love to find some additional titles by this author.

I grew up with this book and this story... I have always had an Old Befana doll hanging in my house at Christmas, both when I was a child and now that I am married with my own little girl... Just a lovely story and legend...

4La Befana: An Italian Night After Christmas  Jan 30, 2010

The text was on a level that was appropriate for any age of child. (I enjoyed it as an adult, as well.) The il- lustrations were quite well done and went with the story very well.
