Learning Starts At Home: A Parent Handbook for Infants & Toddlers

We have the wonderful opportunity and responsibility for nurturing our children. This nurturing process takes place in several areas of development, including physical, emotional and intellectual. Many parents focus on the first two, leaving the latter to be covered in school. However, the foundation for learning starts at home. This book was created for those who are interested in improving the quality of time you spend with your children, whether you are a full-time stay at home parent or not. The book includes sample lesson plans for teaching the basics before starting school, such as the alphabet and counting.

5A Must Read for New Parents  Aug 27, 2007
By Judith L. Ceccanti
This book is a wonderful beginning for parents who are interested in being active in their child's early education. Sarah's flexible lesson plans allow parents to keep and maintain order to their child's world while giving them the opportunity to thrive. When parents take a more active role in their child's development, teachers will have a more solid foundation to build upon.

1Overpriced and Does NOT Have Lesson Plans!  Sep 24, 2009
By Dawn De Lorenzo "Author of Peanut Butter and Jelly Possibilities: Youthful Inspirations"
This tiny little 4x6 book with 68 pages (not including index, etc.) is NOT worth $11.95! More importantly, this book does NOT include lesson plans! While the author admits she is not an educator up front...it is quite misleading to call what is in her book "lesson plans" because they are NOT. I AM an educator so I know what a lesson plan should have: goals/objectives, materials, preparation, strategies, and any options for children with different abilities. Rather, this book provides brief summaries of the activities she did with her daughter throughout the day. The "outlines" she calls "lesson plans" are simply a synopsis of her daily schedule (eat, play, brush hair, nap, etc.)

If you are looking for a high quality book with REAL lesson plans that provides detailed objectives and developmental goals, but is easy to follow (you do not need to be a teacher) I HIGHLY recommend Creative Resources for Infants and Toddlers by Judy Herr and Terri Swim Creative Resources for Infants & Toddlers (Creative Resources for Infants and Toddlers). It costs much more, but it is worth EVERY penny.

3Buyer Beware - author is a PDF/Ezzo follower!  Nov 22, 2007
By p31Mom
I just received this book yesterday and was very dissappointed to read that the author is a follower of the Ezzo's PDF methods. Of the 6 books she recommends, 3 are his books. Much of her program is structured around this methods. While these methods have worked for some, many have found them to be damaging and fundamentally unsound. They are specifically discouraged many professionals. However, this is not a reveiw of that author.
That warning stated, I still give this book a 3 star rating because it does contain some wonderful ideas and recommendations outside of the PDF and the author does not judge other methods and emphasises that her ideas for this aspect of caregiving will work if you are not using PDF.
It is a quick read (physically small book as well as very short). I look forward to reviewing the authors actually work in greater detail but for now just wanted to make sure that potential buyers knew of the strong influence of PDF/Ezzo on this book and author.

5Must have for parents  Sep 01, 2007
By Thomas J. Mcnamara
Sarah has created an easy to read reference guide for parents who are interested in the health and development of their children. This guide is flexible and can easily be adjusted to fit most lifestyles. Child safety and physical capabilities have been considered while providing conrete ideas on how to encourage young children to be inquisitive and have a passion for learning that may be carried on in life.

5Lisa  Aug 23, 2007
By Lisa
Learning Starts at Home provides parents with necessary fundamental principles in the early years that allow a child to reach their fullest achievement later in life. By following the book's clear lesson plan design and organizational thought process, parents can create a confident, independent, healthy and intelligent child that grows to master and excel above and beyond others.
