Good Info, difficult to read Dec 24, 2007 "Life and Death in an Oxygen Atmosphere" starts off by an attempt to teach enough chemistry to unerstand the following text. Then it explains the complexities of "reactive oxygen metabolites", usually called "radicals", and explains the many known impacts of these. This book is difficult to read, even for a chemist. A lot of good information is presented, but mostly in a confusing format. On the positive side it is a good compilation of reactions with discussion of their known effects on the human body. Over 200 literature references, well researched. The author knows his chemistry.
On the other hand he holds some pretty inflexible opinions. To quote "To assume that we can outsmart evolution by antioxidant supplementation is foolhardy" or "Men using this (testosterone) patch are obviously making a pact with the devil" (pages 169 and 168). 99% of the literature quoted is more than 7 years old, which makes me wonder if I get an up-to-date view of the subject matter.
If you are scientifically minded and want to know more about the chemical details, do buy this book. However if you want a good book on antioxidants, buy L. Packer's (The Antioxidant Miracle, 1999), he is superb.
