Life on a Rock

Kate lived on Highborne Cay, Exuma, in the Bahamas for five years. Most people think it would be a vacation paradise to live and work on a small island, away from the stress and confusion of everyday life. This book will tell otherwise. It is the true story of a woman who learned about courage, fortitude and patience as she continually faced extraordinary and often dangerous situations in a place that had no doctor, no police nor other emergency personnel. Her everyday experiences in an isolated surrounding provide excitement and give a fresh and thought-provoking view of unusual events that were part of her life on this tiny, unprotected island in the Caribbean. From an armed robbery, drug traders and illegal immigrants, to medical mishaps and disasters at sea, Alison learned in those short five years that she and her husband, Peter, would be forced to step forward to protect the island and its people. In their jobs, they would need to cope—or quit.

3Island fantasy reality check  Jul 04, 2010
Daily adventures -- some large but most small -- recounted in an hour by hour fashion by city folk turned island caretakers can become tiresome. Somewhat repetitive in details and not particularly skillfully composed but still Life on a Rock provides an interesting insider's perspective in an easy read that may disabuse your fantasy to live for extended period of time on remote tropical island. Some photos add interest but too small and not scaleable on iPad.

2British colonialism redux  Mar 01, 2010
I'm sorry I paid money for this book, thereby supporting a racist (albeit well-meaning and unconsciously so)colonialist. She spent five isolated years on a rock, and the only people she finds important enough to fully describe are the wealthy white boat/yacht owners. The afro-caribbean workers on her rock barely get a mention, and when she does mention them she refers to them as "boys" and "lads." She phonetically transcribes their speech, which she does not do to the white characters, and makes much of their illiteracy, no doubt because she knows that the island owners' decision to hire white assistants for the managers, when there are capable black workers who have spent 35 years on the island, is not very defensible.
True, she and her husband have very interesting adventures, but she is not a very good writer, and I expected more description of a very colorful and fascinating place.

For all of us who dream of spending the rest of our lives on an island in the sun, this book shows us the realities of living and working in paradise. There were times I could not put this book down because I wanted to see what adventure the next page would bring.

4Pure escape...  Sep 10, 2009
After seeing "Life on a Rock" listed in my local newspaper, I ordered it right away. Upon starting the book, the reader is immediately taken away to life on a rock. Who knew that life in the Bahamas is sometimes hard, often unpredictable, but equally magical.
Excellent book- I enjoyed every page!

5Best Real Life Adventure Ever  Jun 30, 2009
I couldn't put this book down and neither will you. It is a compelling story of a courageous woman and her husband who take on a real life adventure, while managing an out island in the Caribbean.
Kate has my true admiration that she could not only endure the hardships that came her way but could often make the outcome better. She never lost the faith. She seems to not know the word "quit". She makes me want to get out of my "comfort zone" and feel the world around me.
From combating robbers, giving VHF communications to boaters, managing "Cheap Charlie's" and the marina and learning to shoe her beloved horse...she is inspiring. And with her husband, Peter, by her side they make an enviable team.

Men, women and teens alike will enjoy this pioneering adventure.
