Lost Letter

The newly wed Jimmy and Maggie McDougal learn the news of Maggie's pregnancy just weeks after Jimmy is called to duty in World War II. Frequent letters and their deep love for one another provide comfort while they are apart. But, suddenly, Jimmy's letters to Maggie cease and the Army confirms the worst of her fears. Alone, Maggie raises their daughter, Mary, who never knows her father. Some sixty years later, Maggie is diagnosed with a terminal illness and eventually moves in with Mary, who becomes her caretaker. At about the same time that Maggie learns of her diagnosis, the Army, during a base closure, discovers a World War II letter addressed to her. While Mary is coping with a dying mother, a demanding job and trying to learn as much as possible about the father she never knew, the Army is searching for the intended recipient of the World War II letter. Will Maggie succumb to her illness before the Lost Letter reaches her?

3Disappointed  Feb 09, 2010
By Oboe Mom
I eagerly anticipated reading this book based on its reviews by Amazon readers, but the best I can say about it is that it was a quick read that I was able to finish. The premise of the story was very good. The parts of the book dealing with Jimmy and the Battle of the Bulge were well written and the back and forth between wartime and present time made the book more interesting...but everything else was not written or edited well at all. As another reviewer stated, the writing was simplistic and one never got to know any of the characters very well. The letter being delivered just before Maggie's death was too sensationalistic. To have the same rating as "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett is terribly misleading as "Lost Letter" is definitely not on par with that great read. Do yourself a favor and read "The Help" instead.

I enjoyed this book very much. I loved how the author combined the past and the present. I found the ending to be touching and hopeful. A wonderful love story.

5GREAT READ!!!!  May 28, 2009
By L. Conrad "lesleeloo"
Great read!! Read it in less than 24 hours as I had to find out what would happen next. Very easy to relate to the love, troubles and reality of life. It flowed effortlessly through the lives of the characters and vividly illustrated the great power of love. Look forward to the next book!!

1Worst Novel Ever.  Jul 24, 2010
By Sarah J. Thoreen "Sarah Thoreen"
This is one of the worst novels I have ever read. It is very poorly edited, with numerous plot mistakes and grammar errors.

I could not even finish reading it.

3Good Plot Poorly Delivered  Jan 08, 2010
By K. B. Anderson
"Lost Letter" had the potential for being a great book. Unfortunately the author failed in his chance to make it one. The plot of the book is at once heart-wrenching and suspenseful as the reader waits to discover whether Mary's mother will receive the letter before her death. My criticism is in the writer's style. His writing is very simplistic since he writes in very short sentences, almost like "sound bites". This style does not allow for adequate character development or a chance for the reader to feel a part of the story. My fifth grade grandson, who has read all of the Harry Potter books, could easily read this book. However I think he also would be bored by the story's presentation. In short, I eagerly looked forward to reading this Christmas present and was very disappointed.
