Eliza is a modern young African-American woman who lives in San Francisco, enjoys her independence, and steers clear of falling in love.Eliza and her best friend Sharon are planning Sharon wedding when she begins to have dreams that questions her beliefs. She begins to have recurring dreams of being a slave in another lifetime, her waking hours become haunted by the characters in those dreams. Asleep, she is Thea, an animated and perceptive young woman whose friend, Jonathan, is a talented young slave who has been drawing her face since they were children. She meets a artist named Vincent and senses that he is interested, but she sees no place in her life for him As the dreams become increasingly poignant, Eliza and her friends, decide to travel to the south and look for the people and places Eliza believes she knew long ago. Accompanying them are Sharon's fiancé, Stephen, and Vincent. The four of them depart, prepared to accept whatever discoveries they make.
