Mabel's Letters: by Letter Writers of the Twentieth Century

Mabel Hetzer saved Depression- and World War II-era letters from her brother, James, and others. He was first trying to “make it big on Broadway” but enlisted and then wrote from boot camp and the European Theater where he entertained troops with Mickey Rooney and lesser stars. These letters, which are a great cultural reflection of the times, were written mostly by James who both entertained his family with his tales and sustained their hopes for his success and return.

4Pictur of WWII from Letters written Home  Jan 30, 2010
By L.Bicknell
This book provides a view into the world during World War II and the Army outfit called Jeep Shows that entertained the troops. It is an easy read with many references to how much (little) money a soldier had and how they lived.

4It is an amazing book of letters  Aug 20, 2010

It is an amazing collection of letters that sets the stage for this period in our country"s history..and is not a fictionalized one.

5Fascinating look into the lives of soldiers and those back home  Feb 01, 2010
By C. Randell "Tina"
Dedication, patriotism and sacrifice describe the lives of those involved in WWII as well as those back home. This fascinating read exemplifies those character traits as you get a peek into the lives in Mabel's letters. The reader may want to know that James and Elouise did reunite after the war and had two more children, Mary Kathryn (my sister) and Christina Lynn (myself). There are four grandsons and one granddaughter.

"I truly enjoyed reading the letters and think it is not only a unique book but one which gives a personal look into individuals and families and their lives during a wartime."
