Simple Steps for Managing an Investment Portfolio like a Pro Jan 15, 2011
By Paul During the past several years, I have become increasingly disillusioned with a "Buy and Hold" investing strategy. In my search for an alternative strategy, I came across "Manage your Own Money" by Daniel J. Clemons and I'm glad I did.
Dan does not believe in market timing 100% of one's portfolio. However, he does believe in adjusting one's equity allocation based on market conditions and he explains his Position Trading methodology in the book. My favorite topics covered in the book include the following:
1. How to determine asset allocation based on risk tolerance.
2. How to utilize a Watch List to pick funds, ETFs, and/or stocks to be included in a portfolio.
3. How to adjust equity allocation and/or trade like a Pro through the use of several easy to understand technical indicators.(The Predictor
and Summation Index)
Other topics included in the book were bond portfolio construction, budgeting, insurance and retirement/estate planning.
I find it interesting that Dan does not believe in the use of sell stops in his trading strategy. To me, that signifies that Dan has a lot of confidence in his system.
A couple of pluses if you decide to implement Dan's investing ideas. He maintains a free blog about his strategy, updated each weekend. Dan will also enthusiastically address any questions you may have through e-mail.
In the past 30 years, I have probably read well over 100 books about investing. I can honestly say that "Manage your Own Money" is included with a mere handful that I have read, where I was able to actually take the information in the book and incorporate it into my own investing process.

With This Book Save Money on Expensive Investment Newsletters Nov 06, 2010
By DaveM Over the years I've subscribed to many newsletters. Including Bob Brinker, who doesn't share his methodology for entering and exiting the market.
With this book you won't need to subscribe to costly newsletters. Manage Your Own Money provides a disciplined approach to your buying strategy for mutual funds, stocks and bonds. There are many tips in this book that investors need to know.

Outstanding book - highly recommended! Nov 30, 2010
By OKStock Trader As a CPA, I have read dozens of books on investing and trading over the years. Most of these books have had little or no useful information in terms of giving me a framework from which to approach investing my money. Additionally, many books that you will read on investing contain information that is pertinent to how the market worked during a certain point in time (i.e. the tech bubble) but the information is no longer relevant.
Daniel Clemons' book is excellent because it does not fall in either of these categories. Quite the contrary - this books provides a very easy to understand yet highly effective framework from which to approach the market - i.e. when is a good time to buy and when is a good time to sell. I have been tracking the market based on Dan's approach for close to a year now. Nothing is 100%, but if you follow the author's disciplined approach you will greatly increase your chances of success.
The author also has a terrific free weekly blog which I would highly recommend that you read in conjunction with this book. I highly recommend that you read this book - it is one that I refer to often.

Just what the Dr. ordered. Nov 02, 2010
By V. Sakraida Thank's Dan for doing all of the testing and research. I have been back testing your system and so far it is right on target. I can't find any flaws. Unlike anything else I've evaluated, your system simply works. Thanks again. Implementing your technologies will make all the difference.

Long on chat, short on techniques Jul 05, 2010
By Patrick Stirling Just got this book and sad to say, I'm disappointed. [...] is way too much for its content, [...] would be more reasonable. He's really just recycling common wisdom - diversify, have a will, understand insurance and estate planning.
His "Predictor" is interesting but he doesn't back up his explanations with figures, I'll have to research the graphs and indicators he talks about separately. For the amount he's selling the book for I think the explanations should be much more complete, with more numbers. It's easy to show a historical graph and point to the buy/sell points, but much harder when you don't know whether this is a temporary peak or trough in the market.
Basing retirement planning on a 9% growth rate and a 6.5% withdrawal rate is ridiculous. If you started a plan like that any time in the last 10 - 15 years, you'd be in trouble. The more common wisdom I've seen is more like a 6% growth and a 4% withdrawal, and nowadays that's probably too optimistic.
OTOH his style is readable and interesting and he does cover many of the basic investment and estate planning points. But this can all be learned elsewhere without spending as much money!
