Change Yourself, Change Your Practice Aug 14, 2010
By R. G. Wilkins As it says on the front of this book, this is not a how-to book. It is a who-to-be book. It is not a cookbook, pre-programmed, one size fits all type of dental management book. Dr. Cooper analyzes the operation of dental practices by examining how humans work from the inside-out. I found this to be a very refreshing approach. Most dental books focus on systems and protocols as the path to a successful practice. You can have great systems and still struggle if you don't have the internal skills to be an owner, leader, and manager. This book focuses on the skills the dentist needs to develop in each of these essential roles.
The book is written in a question and answer format. I related in a personal way with most of the problems the dentists asked about. I found Dr. Cooper's answers addressed the issues at levels I never even considered before reading this book. Since one of the main tenets of the book is that we must hold ourselves accountable for what goes on in our lives, it is sometimes uncomfortable facing up to one's own shortcomings. However, the coaching in the book is very powerful. It can help you break out of patterns and limiting beliefs that have been gettting in the way of having the practice and life you want. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to change for the better.
Very enlightening Aug 13, 2010
By VennPete This book does a great job of articulating many of the issues that many dentists struggle with but don't have anyone to talk to about. There are a lot of things in practice that we dentists often don't know how to handle or what to do with and this book clearly points out that most of those problems ultimately can be traced back to the dentist/owner not setting up policies or providing the leadership to manage or prevent them. We go to school to become dentists and sometimes resent the fact that we have to be business owners. Changing our perspective on the business side of things from something we "have" to do to something we "get" to do can make all the difference. Dr. Cooper answers questions from different dentists to address many of the common problems facing dentists. It was a very interesting read and I learned a lot about myself and changes I need to make in my practice and my leadership style. Highly recommended!
