Meditations of John Burroughs: Nature is Home

A compilation of sixty insightful reflections from John Burroughs, the great naturalist from New York whose friends included Walt Whitman, John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. This is the sixth book in the popular series by Chris Highland that includes Muir, Thoreau, Emerson, Whitman and Fuller. The editor draws upon years as an interfaith chaplain and student of Nature to highlight the best of Burroughs' spiritual side. Drawing from Burroughs' many books, this collection presents his close observation of wild Nature in an easy daily-reading format. Burroughs was a radical lover of the cosmos who saw that 'the earth is divine, and . . . God is everywhere.' His creed was 'not even a faith; it is a love, an enthusiasm, a consecration to natural truth.' With selections placed alongside quotations from an incredible diversity of thinkers and sprinkled with crisp black and white photographs, this work takes an essential place in this series packed with wisdom for the path.

4Good introduction to Burroughs  Sep 22, 2010

It's short and sweet, and made me buy more books on John Burroughs. What a fascinating man and a deeply touching life.

5An Inspiring Little Book  Oct 01, 2008
By John Long
I had not heard of John Burroughs before I read this book, although I had read others of Chris Highland's books. This one is particularly powerful. Burroughs made me look at the natural world in ways I had not even known before. I recently took the book with me on an outdoor trip with friends, and read them several passages around the fire at night. Chris's book will be on my essential equipment list for future trips. Burroughs is a naturalist on a level with John Muir, and more folks should read what he has to say about the natural world, man and our own spiritual awareness. And the framework that Chris has created for Burroughs' writings makes them even more powerful.
