Praises for Memories of an Eastern Sky Aug 21, 2007
By M. Aceituno This is an intriguing and heartbreaking story filled with beautiful images, Chinese folklore, and page-turning suspense. The Cultural Revolution unfolds in all its brutality and emotional horror through the eyes of one close knit family. Based on a true story, the characters and their experiences will stay in the reader's mind for a long time. I highly recommend it

Uplifting Sep 08, 2007
By MAS Excellent read. The statistics are mind numbing but this story puts flesh and blood on the numbers. The story demonstrates the indominability of the human spirit to survive adversity and atrocity and remain a compassionate being. The story needs to be read, not for just entertainment value but for understanding the history of a recent event in our world. The author wrote it as a tribute to his family and they have every reason to be proud of their contribution to the man he came to be. Sad but uplifting.

A heart-felt tale of human resiliance Aug 18, 2010
By David J. Winter This story, about a Chinese family during the oppression of The Cultural Revolution and the scars left in it's tragic aftermath, is really a heart wrenching and emotional story of human cruelty and resilience. Told from the point of view of a small boy, the story engages the emotions in the description of a series of individual tragedies, utter frustrations and, ultimately, triumph. While the book is a novel by Andy Zhang, it is based on real experiences. I was also struck by the narrative style that validates the youth and intelligence of the main character. This is a very "real" story. Find a few hours to read it, you won't want to put it down.

Imagine- your father is an architect and manages a large factory. The political winds change. A thug accuses him of being a counterrevolutionary. He loses his job and parts of his fingers are cut off in an effort to force him to confess to crimes he has not committed...
Imagine - you mother is charged with subversion and is sentenced to seven years in a reeducation camp. She is allowed to visit home three days a year. Your family has to give away your youngest brother because there is no one at home to take care of him. You sister has been sent hundreds of miles away to work on a farm...
Imagine - you have nothing to eat. It is freezing. There is a hole in the wall in your home so that the people living next door can listen to every conversation...
Andy Zhang's MEMORIES OF AN EASTERN SKY is a wonderful true story in novel form. It is told from the point of view of a small boy growing up in China during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Anyone with an interest in China's 20th or 21st Century should read his book. It is a lesson for Americans who are blessed with a stable democracy.
Zhang tells a sad story of political oppression, but his family and the characters around him retain their humanity and their optimism. They suffer, but they survive, and ultimately prosper. A fascinating book about daily life in China during a time of turmoil.

Memories of an Eastern Sky Sep 23, 2007

I loved this book. The book was so powerful and touching. I cried for Andy Zhang's family. I am the parent of an adopted girl from China. I can never read enough about China and it's culture. The struggle and sacrifices that the author's family had to endure is remarkable. This book captures the true meaning of the human spirit. I highly recommend this book.
