Great Resourse Jan 07, 2009
By Dr. Mary Ann Rosenfeld As a 62 year old menopausal woman, I was delighted to be introduced to Dr. Barbara Taylor's new book. Recently, my internist and others have asked about my continuing use of HRT. Although, this is a yearly conversation I have with my gynecologist, the recent queries have been on my mind. Consequently, I was thrilled to find this immediately approachable, thoughtful, original, well organized and researched book on such an important subject. Flipping at once to the subjects of greatest concern (HRT and breast cancer) I encountered specific, well thought through discussions of my concerns and alternative ways of approaching these issues. Suddenly I was armed with enormous amount of data and a logical way of tailoring it to my needs.
Additionally, as a clinical psychologist in the Los Angeles area, this book will serve as a guide for my patients in their quest to understand what is occurring during menopause and offering a personal, professional and sensible guide to navigating these changes.
With appreciation for a great resource!

Better late than never! Dec 29, 2008
By Ron Taylor I am Barbara Taylor's elder brother. I proudly tell you this, however, it has no relevance to my review of this book. When this hefty book arrived, I glanced at it, uncertain how I would "get through it", as the topic has never seemed of any interest to me. After I stumbled across the "for the guys" section, I found myself interested and reading, and was truly surprised at how much clarity I attained from just reading a few pages. Barbara has carefully, in plain language, illustrated how our human bodies are all affected, in one way or another, by menopause. As guys were lead to believe that we didn't even have to deal with "that", it was never openly talked about (even with an OB/GYN sister). Identifying or understanding the "crossovers", (at least for the guys) was mostly ignored--until now. Moreover, I am inclined to suggest this as the perfect tool to help men understand their women! I would highly recommend all adults read this book, which proves to be an easy read, and more importantly, explores and answers issues you may not have realized as being your own.
Good job Sis!

Even a dumb guy can now understand menopause! Dec 09, 2008
By George R. Walther

What I like about this book is its multi-level readability. Since menopause affects us guys, too, I'm glad that there's a single chapter that "dumbs it down" for a cursory explanation of menopause. OR, I can read some of the chapters in greater detail. OR, I can refer back for a very deep understanding. I think a woman would want to have this book as a reference for the rest of her life.
The biggest revelation for me was that menopause isn't some unpleasant event that a husband/brother/son has to endure for a couple of years, but a lasting, natural phase of life...that's manageable.
I got to "play with" the accompanying slide chart that lets a woman determine how various treatment options would affect her, given her risk profiles for various diseases (several cancers, osteoporosis, etc.) I was amazed that a subject so complex could be made so simple and understandable. Definitely get the slide chart to go with the book.
Any guy with a woman in his life (duh!) should skim through this book and focus on the "for guys" chapter, then pass it along to his woman/women. EVERY WOMAN would benefit from studying the book in detail.
At first I was put off by the size of the book. It's HUGE and extremely comprehensive. Then, I noticed that's partly because the type size is large, which I came to appreciate, since I'm nearly 60, and I notice that us guys (and you menopausal women) all have declining eyesight. The other reason the book's so big is its comprehensive nature. BUT, you don't have to read it all. You can just jump to the chapter that's of particular relevance (like you detect some disease symptom or start feeling hot flashes or notice a decline in sex drive) and just read that chapter by itself. It's really a reference book that covers every base.
Oh, one more thing, I never thought a book on this topic could actually be fun and funny, but this one is.

Finally an individualized approach to Menopause Mar 02, 2009
By Melinda M. Larson

Bravo to Dr. Barbie for finally presenting a very individualized approach to managing menopause. After you answer the questions on the worksheets, you are off and running. The answers will enable you to discover the best options for managing specific areas of your own menopausal concern. I have tried several things suggested and have found them to be extremely helpful.
My favorite chapters were, Chapter 11: Night Sweats, Chapter 12 Insomnia and Chapter 16 Craving for Sweets (Eeks!), Carbohydrates and Alcohol.
This book is a resource I will have in my bookshelf for a lifetime!

Excellent Resource Jan 25, 2009
By Rosanne Larson I found "Menopause: Your Management Your Way," well written, easy to follow, and a great resource. As a 61 year old ovarian cancer survivor, I am always looking for ways to improve my health and stay current, and this book will be an excellent resource for that purpose. I think any women in this phase of life would benefit from reading this book. I also loved the large print.
