Mercenary's Tale: Fighting Fidel Castro

A short-timer Marine is recruited from Quantico Marine Base by the CIA into anti-Castro, "Operation Mongoose" to train Cuban refugees on raids into Cuba. The condensed, but true story explores political intrigue and often sinister characters in turbulent, bloody South Florida during the early sixties. Hints of betrayal complicate rescue missions and an unlikely love affair adds further tension. Readers are led through a bizarre world where ambush is only the dawn of misfortune, and where the horrors of combat, shipwreck, starvation and worse become commonplace. The saga of bravery, betrayal, personal heartache and bittersweet retribution is completed as friends give the ultimate sacrifice and the U.S. Government indicts its own mercenaries.

4Mercenary's Tale: Fighting Fidel Castro  Dec 07, 2008
By Keith A. Potter
If you have enjoyed Clancy, Child and Flynn as much as I have over the years, you are going to love this one. While the story is true, and as horrifing as parts of the experience are, the author must have some Irish poet in him to convey the life and humor of the people involved so well. I normally prefer novels and historical ficton to the real thing, but this one reads so well that I'm really glad I made an exception for this book and look forward to Heuisler's next one.

5Mercenary's Tale  Jun 08, 2009
By John Singer
Mercenary's Tale immediately transports the reader to the sights and sounds of the Anti-Castro movement of the early sixties. William Heuisler reveals a world of colorful, passionate characters whose paths cross at a time and place that will change each of them for the rest of their lives. The author arouses all of the reader's senses through graphic, intelligent and often poetic descriptions, bringing great truth and clarity to historic events. Mercenary's Tale is very informative and entertaining and I look forward to reading more from this very gifted writer.

5An Entertaining Read  Feb 04, 2009
By T. Ripp
Heuisler does a good job of drawing you in and keeping you anxiously filled with anticipation and concern for his characters. This is a gritty and raw tale of human survival and misfortune. For me, it was also a miniature history lesson on US and Cuban relations. You'll enjoy this book.

4Survival of the Fittest and Most Resilient  Jan 27, 2009
By Ann C. Peterson "EXPete"
Mercenary's Tale is an excellent and intriguing story mixing equal portions of philosophy, passion and persistence in the face of raw survival. Told from the first person point of view, Mr. Heuisler develops his characters to the fullest extent of his personal knowledge of them. Each turn of events in this story makes the reader hungry to discover what will happen next, and the historical backdrop of cold-war Cuban / US political relationship adds to the intrigue. Looking forward to additional material from Mr. Heuisler in the future.

4Excellent read  Jan 03, 2009
By C. Easom "soul essentials"
Not normally drawn to books on military subjects or those written in the first person, I was pleasantly surprised with this auto-biographical book. Heusiler's easy-to-read style is well structured and emotively draws the reader into the storyline, painting vivid images along the way. The only criticism I have is that the book is not longer as I found myself wanting to read more by the end. I'd thoroughly recommend this book and I eagerly await Heusiler's next offering.
