5Her paintings, like her jazz singing, will leave you breathless  Sep 23, 2008
By Steve Meyer
This book came yesterday and I am still stunned. It's just not nearly enough to say Meredith d'Ambrosio is multitalented or even a renaissance woman. She's a polymath (a person with great and varied learning) who has applied that, plus elan and an intimate contact with nature, into producing some of the most sublime jazz singing and watercolor, oil and eggshell mosaic paintings you will ever know. Hella, Meredith invented the art of eggshell mosaic! For checking out that alone, you should whisk this book off the virtual shelf. There's everything from a warmly humanistic black pencil rendition of Albert Einstein to contrasting, impressionistic watercolors of New England and European land and seascapes, a Chocolate Lab, Wild Iris Roses and Glowing October Hearths. 'Magic' barely begins to describe the intense beauty of 'Saturday Morning,' 'Apiary,' 'Bois de Boulogne,' 'Beneath The Mystic River Bridge,' 'Leaving The Castle,' 'Versegeres, Switzerland,' 'Taos Winter' and a host of others. Her favorite artists include Itzak Levitan and Albert Anker as well as Monet and Winslow Homer. But wait, there's more! Meredith's ever-swinging piano-playing husband Haydn Higgins accompanies these works with a fascinating account of the life of a chanteuse courted by John Coltrane, able to launch into a repertoire of 3500 of what Tony Bennett calls `America's art songs' at the drop of a note, rocked by heartbreak and buoyed by resurgence and love, and who just happens to create astounding images in her spare time. Respected jazzer Doctor Herb Wong said Meredith `is a must on your life list' and these glorious compositions only add to that assessment. Serge Baudot wrote, `She leaves you spellbound with her impeccable diction, great sense of phrasing, intonation and gentle swing.' He might as well have been talking about any of the breathtaking creations in this book. I've followed Meredith for many years into jazz spring. You now have the chance to walk with her into art's summer, autumn and winter as well, a journey you will surely treasure.
