5Joe Lacy hit a 3-pointer with Mountain Reign  Dec 15, 2009
By Richard L. Robinson "author political thrillers"
With a voice which will draw comparisons to Kentucky's Mountain Laueret, Jesse Stuart, author Joe Lacy has penned a novel which captures the simple esence of mountain life as viewd through the lens of a basketball hoop. Lacy's story of Hazelwood High School's impossible quest for a berth to the state basketball tournament will make you feel like you're one of the fans sitting bleachers at each game. He leaves you cheering for the team on the court and for the boys on the team in life.

5A Feel-Good Read  Dec 05, 2009
By Wayne Holmes "Author/Compiler"
I had the privilege of working with Joe Lacy on his engaging book, "Mountain Reign." The fascinating story pulls readers into a world of high drama. Strong characterization feeds the plot as the story twists and turns its way to the payoff scene at the state championship. I have roots in the Appalachian area, but I learned more about mountain life through Lacey's moving story than I ever knew before. It's the kind of can't-put-down read you will want to share with friends. Lacy delivers from beginning to end.

5Mountain Reign Delivers Big Time  Dec 04, 2009
By Bailie Morlidge
Joe Lacy's writing style and entertaining characters will make Mountain Reign hard to put down. Lacy's description of life in the dirt poor Appalachian mountains makes it feel as if he lived it himself. Although this is a great basketball book, it is also a great book about life. The characters overcome impossible odds while growing up in poverty during an innocent time in American history (1949/1950). The characters come alive so vividly that you will be pulling for them to overcome all of life's hardships as well as win every game. This is a book that you will hate to come to an end but you will love the ending. This book was written for everyone. Read this book. You'll love it!

5MORE THAN BASKETBALL  Dec 19, 2009
By H. Michael Brewer
MOUNTAIN REIGN satisfies at many levels. As a sports story, Lacy so colorfully captures the sweaty, crowd-roaring excitement of high school basketball that the reader feels exhausted after the narration of each game, pulled into the struggle of will and muscle and heart.
As a coming of age story, we readers grow to know and love Veacher Leatherton, the senior hoopster who dreams that basketball might offer an escape from an alcoholic father and a dead-end job in the coal mines. Through Veacher's experiences, we recall our own youthful struggles, the bigger-than-life hopes of high school years, the friendships we thought would last forever, and the first blush of romance.
MOUNTAIN REIGN also shines as a loving and honest look at the proud, misunderstood Appalachian culture of bygone decades. Whatever Lacy's roots may be, he writes authentically and reverently of an earthy people, evoking both their language and their spirit. I was often reminded of the writings of Jesse Stuart and Manly Wade Wellman.
Best of all, MOUNTAIN REIGN is an inspirational story in the best sense of that term. Lacy avoids syrupy platitudes and the shallow, feel-good philosophy that we can accomplish anything to which we set our minds. Set in the real world, beset by real challenges and obstacles, this story celebrates the power of determination, hard work, and big dreams in the lives of believable characters who seem genuinely alive, warts and all.
Read this book. Relish it. Then read it again. Yes, it's that good.
