This is a Great "First Generation" Encyclopedia of Southern Gospel Music. Dec 28, 2009 This is the first compilation of Southern Gospel Music presented in an encyclopedia style. It is in alphabetical order by the artist. It contains detailed biographical information on the quartets, singers, and groups that shaped Southern Gospel Music. One bit of trivia that comes to mind, is that J.D.Sumner holds the Guiness World Book of Records for having the lowest bass voice note ever recorded. I congratulate David Bruce Murray for taking on this project, and putting together this first ever Encyclopedia of Southern Gospel Music. This is an excellent 1st Edition.
If the author does a 2nd Edition of this book, I wish he would expand his scope of Southern Gospel Music Musicians. I wish he would include more Southern Gospel Bluegrass bands & artists, like Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver & others, and some contemporary Southern Christian Rock Bands like Third Day from Atlanta, & Jo Jo Billingsly, the former backup singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, who now is an ordained Minister who sings & records Southern Gospel Music. Also, I wish he would condider including The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Mahalia Jackson. He does include the Issaas (Gospel Bluegrass) in this 1st Edition & Thomas Dorsey (The Atlanta Bluesman who converted to Gospel Music.) Also, it includes the magazine "The Singing News", which is devoted to "Classic Southern Gospel Music". Overall, this is a great reference book for Southern Gospel fans. It does contain all the "classic", "mainstream" Southern Gospel Groups & Artists. Overall, it is a GREAT 1st Generation Encyclopedia of Southern Gospel Music. If you're a Southern Gospel Music fan, you'll love this book.
Thanks, and May God Bless!!!

Thanks For Reading Mar 18, 2006 As the author of this encyclopedia on Southern Gospel, I welcome any corrections anyone has to offer. Anyone who can show any information to be inaccurate is encouraged to write me using the contact information printed in book's "Introduction" section.
I have found a few minor errors of a typographical nature since publishing the book. It has also been called to my attention that a couple of dates are off by one year. However, the overall accuracy of the book has yet to be challenged by any credible Southern Gospel music historian or critic.
(Please note, when writing this "review," I rated the book at three stars so as to not artificially inflate the book's rating.)
Thanks for reading.

An Encyclopedia of Southern Gospel Music Mar 17, 2006 This book is informative to a degree about Southern Gospel Music personalities both present and in the past. However, it falls short of an exhaustive detail of the genre in that much of the information is inaccurate and/or not included in the histories of the individuals concerned in the book.
I suppose it is worth the price for the minimal information included in the book.
