My Kind of War

In My Kind of War, author Dick Nygren shares his adventures and journey as a young soldier conscripted during the Second World War to fight in the Pacific. Not without humor, Nygren illustrates with poignancy, raw grit and a fair amount of irony what it was like to become a man during the Great War. Upon being drafted, he made his way from basic training to overseas training and, finally, describes what it was like to be plopped down in New Guinea and how it is he kept his wits about him. Particularly relevant in regards to modern America’s War Against Terror, the author’s message is a resounding and patriotic hymn to love one’s country and die if necessary for freedom. As the country loses thousands of WWII veterans each and every day, this sort of personal narrative becomes a staple in preserving the nation’s memory. The fact is that Nygren’s war is one that all Americans must value and do their best to immortalize.
