My Name is Joe

For the first time in his life, Joe hasn’t got a smart-assed answer. He’s always been hilarious, irreverent and even cocky—if a little unsure of himself—but this time he’s in “the B.T.—big trouble…” in college. His Dean of Students has told him he has to write the story of his life or face expulsion from school; all this just because he’s in love, and was making love with his girlfriend at the wrong time in the wrong place on campus. His punishment? Write your life or say bye-bye to school and whatever future that might bring. Joe’s had more life experience than most of his friends, and he isn’t reluctant to talk about it, either: “Check this out on yourself: Make a list of the top 100 things you want to learn… and the top 100 things you’ve had to learn. Think there’d be any overlap? Not much, I guarantee it.” Joe may have been through more than most, but he’s more than willing to take us along for the ride as he tells his story, the story of this transplant patient who nearly died as a young boy just after getting his new liver; and a brave young man who hasn’t been afraid of anything since. Except maybe this…

5Don't call him a transplant patient.  Nov 08, 2007
By Maureen Moo Dodge "Maureen Moo-Dodge"
Joe has had to deal with a lot in his 19 years on earth--a liver transplant, rejection (the organ variety, not from his family) lack of "closure' (but he doesn't believe in closure anyway) having to take anti-rejection drugs for his entire life and now this thing with the the Dean of Students. He has a lot going on and he tells you about all of it in a story that is funny, true, frightening (just think about having your liver replaced) and sweet. The story is about relationships: child-parent, patient-doctor, donor-recipient (that is one intersting relationship since the donor is dead--but read about how it affects Joe and his paretnt you will see that it is an amazing relationship). The momentum of Joe's story engulfs you and soon you are talking like him and thinking like him. Richard Holloway gives you a good read. " If you want to know the truth, and I know you do", you are going to love Joe.
