My Steamboat: A Ski Town Childhood

In the freewheeling memoir My Steamboat, Dori Duckels DeCamillis revels in the uncommon cold of her Rocky Mountain girlhood--complete with fierce, funny parents, wily siblings, improbably-named classmates, and the feisty menagerie who just happened by. Set in the shadow of Colorado's postcard-perfect Storm Mountain, her book recounts how the people and the place irrevocably shaped her, at the very moment her sleepy little hometown was becoming a big-time resort. Part picaresque parable, part insider travelogue, My Steamboat adroitly spins an endearing coming-of-age tale of love, laughter and growing up, candidly reminding us about the abiding power of place and family.

5Great Memories  Dec 01, 2010
By Pam Horne
I ordered 2 copies of this book from the get-go, 1 for me and 1 for my brother. As soon as I read it I couldn't wait to pass it on to my dad and my 2 adult children. I wanted them to go down memory lane and remember the cherished times we all had in Steamboat. My parents had us fishing and camping every weekend in the summer. I appreciate it now more than ever. Thanks Dori for this great record for all of us. I related to all of your wonderful stories!

5A Flood of Emotion  Nov 12, 2010
By Sharon Chesler
I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard! Reading "My Steamboat" was an absolute JOY! Having spent the majority of my youth growing up in Steamboat, reading Dori's book was the most wonderful trip down memory lane. Dori's candid description of the places and events we all loved brought a flood of emotion - uncontrollable laughter, a few tears for those we've lost, and a swell of pride for having friends, like Dori, with such amazing talents!! Thank you, Dori, for reminding me of the wonderful years we had in 'the Boat'. Can't wait to read your next book!!!!

5Brings Back Memories  Oct 14, 2010
By David F. Sanders
I couldn't put this book down. Dori shows a side of Steamboat that tourists will never see. She brought back memories, but more important, actual feelings that I had growing up in Steamboat during the 60's and 70's. It's not about the celebrities, or the rich and famous, but shows the real heart of Steamboat Springs through the eyes of regular people and proves how common people really are everything but common.

5Delightful!  Apr 16, 2010
By David Ethridge
This is a delightful geo-biography. It captures a moment in time when the culture of Steamboat was changing from a primarily ranching/mining community to a tourist/ski town--and from a kid's point of view. While the book is about a special place and a special person, its themes are universal. Dori summons up a cornucopia of hilarious memories and relates them in an honest and heartfelt way. The book allows the reader to reconnect with a unique time and place--even if yours is a different time and place.

5"Running with Steamboat"  Apr 05, 2010
By James Hallman "James"
Move over Burroughs, Sedaris!! This is a truly funny real life account of small town, dysfunction, humor, beauty and love all rolled into one. Just when you thought you were the only one with weird experiences, enlightening moments, and good times with friends that will be secrets forever...well maybe not!
I was crying, laughing so hard by page 10, and absolutely had a hard time putting it down. A great story of personal growth and acceptance that will remind you of your most awkward moments, and overcoming them. Funny, Funny and Very Enjoyable!!
