Mystic Grits: A Southern Girl's Journey to Wisdom

Mystic Grits is a story about a southern girl’s personal evolution and growth into a conscious awakening at midlife –presented as a work in “meta-fiction,” the collision of two literary genres –autobiography sparked with metaphysical spirituality –or, said another way, the “Dance of the Dissonant Daughter” meets Star Trek, the Next Frontier.

Follow a young girl named Precious, the namesake of a wise, Carolina tobacco-farming grandmother –she calls Maw Maw– the magical influence in the girl’s early life and who shows up posthumously as an “image” during a retreat in the mountains and as a consistent voice and guide in her journals.

Struggling with where to start the story of her life’s journey, the author writes, “I climbed the ladder to my attic to collect dust-covered journals and diaries among the luggage, my kid’s outgrown clothes and that vast collection of Beanie Babies I thought would make me rich one day. I wanted to see if there was a story worth reading in the diary pages written as I explored the depths of my soul during life transitions and spirit-filled growth spurts.” Pulling from these journals just a few of the cosmic events and deeper inquiries, she has found a novel way to transform truly personal reflections into a sampling of anecdotal stories about her inner journey beyond her southern traditions and values.

More than just an entertaining story, the book is a recollection of actual moments from the author’s life. Young Precious grows into a spirited woman who, while remaining true to her deep-rooted faith, is also awakened to a more-expansive view of how “to live out loud” and fully embrace her many gifts. So, Mystic Grits is ultimately a story about a conscious awakening. Playing with the Ouija Board Game at her 10th birthday party, Precious is told that she will become a “T-E-A-C-H-E-R,” to which she replies, “Yuck, that’s not what I want to be, I want to be an airline stewardess and see the whole wide world.” Continuing to resist even more obvious messages, she finally learns to surrender, trusting divine guidance to show up just in time for the most critical decisions of her life. These decisions are typical of many who are reflecting on their quest for what’s next, asking the big life questions about who they will marry, the children they might have, how to face daily career challenges, and how to support a friend who faces mortality. Her quests leave her restless as she begins to capture her journey–wrestling with this leap of faith she will ultimately take to become a writer!

This “southern girl’s journey to wisdom,” is divided into four books that illustrate a solid grounding in faith and then an expansion of this faith in herself, in humanity, and in the Divine. Captured in the four section titles – Foundations, Leaps, Lessons, and Mysteries--each set of reflections builds on the revelation that there is more to this life than what we know. The conversations with her Maw Maw Precious give the younger Precious an easier way to talk to God through prayer. Growing in trust, she has a glimpse of a spaceship at Hanging Rock State Park, communes with angels and other guides in her journals and meditations, and has too many coincidences to be just that. Through these magical experiences, Mitsch discovers the marvelous potential that is available to those willing to envision a larger experience of this life and our place in the Universe.

The author ends the book with her views on writing as an act of faith: “I hear a constant drumming to help ‘awaken the torchbearers’ who will lead us to a new place in our human evolution. I have an amazing faith that those who read my story are being called forth with your light. So now as this story ends, a new story begins.” She leaves us all with the invitation to become courageous enough to share our own stories.

5It Took Grits To Write This Book  Jul 10, 2009
By Ruth Ann Harnisch
Thousands of professional coaches have looked up to DJ Mitsch, respected
as a pathbreaker and a leader in the field. Chances are most of them
will be picking their jaws up off the floor as DJ takes them for a wild
ride through her most unconventional life in "Mystic Grits." Fellow
Southerners might join me in saying, "I cain't believe you TOLD that,
Precious!" But she did. And them's the grits. (I gave it the highest rating because it took Five-Star Courage to share such a revealing, personal story.)

5More Than Grits with Cheese  Aug 25, 2009
By Gayle G. Johnson
From the moment I began to read Mystic Grits I realized I had a connection with D.J. Mitsch that stretched beyond our Southern backgrounds. Her journey has awakened in me a spiritual quest of my own. Mystic Grits is worth reading a second time, a little slower, to ponder all the insights and knowledge. Thank-you D.J. for sharing your soul.

By Tim Link "Coach Tim"
Mystic Grits delivers a reading experience that is all at once engaging, entertaining, soulful and provocative. It captivated my heart and stirred my soul while providing a glimpse into one very special persons journey beyond what is known and into that which is mysterious and unseen, yet very real. As a result of reading this book, I've been invited to consider my own life journey more deeply and am ever more mindful of the beauty, mystery and hilarity that surrounds me every day.

5Inspiring, Humorous, Amazing and Highly Recommended!  Jun 27, 2010
By RCBR
Mystic Grits by Darelyn DJ Mitsch is a book about a southern girl's life journey as her spirituality and consciousness evolve. The book, equal parts autobiography and metaphysical nonfiction, is many things: inspiring, humorous, and amazing.

Precious Darelyn Darr (as she was born) was set on her path of discovery from an early age. Confusion about her early bible teachings led her to ask many questions about religion; and although she found peace in her prayers and dreams, she found she got the best answers from her grandmother, Maw Maw. A healer and mystic, Maw Maw was a constant comfort and teacher for DJ, guiding her in life and from beyond.

As DJ's life journey progressed, she experienced phenomena that fuelled her desire to investigate the spiritual realm and her mystical longings. Aware that relaying her experiences might scare people or cause them to think she was an "airhead" or cause her to become an outcast, she nevertheless found people to whom she gravitated (and who were in turn drawn to her) that she could share her experiences with. Her relationship with her friend, Sharon, is heart wrenching and inspiring and shows the depth of DJ's loving and accepting spirit, giving us the example that joy and peace can be found in times of loss and grief. It is through relationships with her friends, family, partners, co-workers, and herself that she learns to trust her intuition and really listen to what the universe is telling her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt as though DJ was sitting with me, having a conversation. Her wry, self-deprecating style is as engaging and refreshing as it is moving and evocative. It is also courageous in its honest and open depiction of that which we cannot see, but which many people instinctively feel - that is, that spirits and heavenly guides are working around and through us. The frequent journal entries and her reflections on the events effectively - and in many cases, humorously - illustrate her personal evolution and acceptance of circumstances. Early in the book, I decided to mark pages that particularly resonated with me, but soon found that I'd be marking almost every page. This book made me think about not easily explained experiences in my own life in a new way. I came away with a resolve to truly live the moments of my life and to hear what the universe is telling me. Highly Recommended.
