Whisk yourself away on a mythical adventure Mar 02, 2011
By IndyGirl What would you do if you were sent away for a month to an island with three other teenage girls, one of which is a despised half sister, to survive only on what nature provides? Hurwitz, in her debut novel Mythikas Island Book One: Diana, shows us one girl's story. Diana, daughter of Zeus, faces her greatest fears when she is given a challenge to survive on Mythikas Island with her nemesis and half sister Athena, and cousins Aphrodite and Persephone. They have thirty days to travel to a pick up point on the opposite side of the island, surviving rugged terrain, rouge waves, abnormally large wolves, lynx, snakes, ghosts and each other. With a seat on the ruling council at Mt. Olympus as the reward, can they succeed against all the odds?
Hurwitz takes us out of the realm of the God's and creates a story about humanity using Greek mythology as a starting point. Written in first person, the author's beautiful descriptions of Mythikas Island makes the reader feel as if they are on this trek along side the girls, feeling the surf under their feet, the rain on their heads and the sun baking their skin. The complexity of Diana's relationship with her half sister is a fascinating dance of sibling rivalry, sisterly banter and reluctant affection.
The only disappointment in this novel comes at the end after Diana has faced her fears and has become more self-confident. Although Diana's personal/internal journey has been completed, the girls' challenge has only just begun. Hurwitz leaves the reader in the midst of an earthquake. Trapped on the beach, they have nowhere to go but up a mountain. The subsequent novels in this series are written from each of the remaining characters' point of view. Fortunately for the reader, Hurwitz is a prolific writer. Book 2: Persephone and Book 3:Aphrodite are currently available with book 4 on its way.
While this book is undoubtably young adult, it is a novel worth reading along with your daughter. It makes the perfect backdrop for engaging her in frank discussions about friendship, trust and self-confidence.
