Nemesis Rising

In the year 2250, the Neptune Space Station goes on-line and soon after becomes an enigma for several unexplained deaths. Captain Thomas Emerson, charged with the investigation, finds his abilities inadequate as each finding turns up nothing. After calling for his brother, Dr. Tubal Jordan, to help, they discover that they are dealing with an ancient life form that cannot be killed, bringing them head on with their own tragic past. Paranoia stalks the space station when it is discovered that this life form could be one of them and was contaminating those they trust the most. After discovering the creature's true agenda, they are forced to engage in a battle at the threshold between the physical and spiritual realms. Their mandate: stop this terror at any cost and defeat is not an option.

Set in the relatively near future upon a space station orbiting Neptune, this story involves a team of scientists coming into contact with a mysterious being who seeks to procreate and who turns out to be literally demonic. The story starts off like Aliens, but ends up Left Behind, with the heroes meeting up with one of the biblical prophets and inexplicably becoming involved in a battle between the forces of Heaven and Hell. Ms. Finkelstein constructs a passable sci-fi novel up until the point where the supernatural gets involved. After that, the plotting gets uneven and she makes the mistake of literalizing that which most biblical scholars believe to be metaphorical symbols (like the "Lions of Judah", which are believed to refer to the ancient judges and generals of Israel, not literal chimeras). The ending would look good if filmed, but is most likely physically improbable. Still, if you put aside such matters, and temper your expectations a bit, Nemesis Rising is readable fantasy.
