No Holier Spot of Ground - A Texas Story

No Holier Spot of Ground – A Texas Story is a huge, sprawling saga of Texas from 1834 to 1869. It covers the period of Texas history from the founding of the Texas Republic to the frenetic and frenzied period of the State’s history following the War for Southern Independence. As a narrative of a family’s history from its origins in South Carolina through the long trek out to Texas with slaves, it is history in a fictional garb. While the historian records what happened, the novelist tells you what it felt like. Smith has performed the dual job well. The story of the Smiths is replete with ambitious men–flawed dreadfully–strong women, devious women, dastardly men, the poignant deaths of babies, children’s dreadful accidents, Civil War casualties, and horrendous yellow fever plague, sexual peccadilloes, and much much more. “A novel so large that once it draws you in, it won’t let you go,” one reviewer says of it, “–a book with the largeness of Lonesome Dove, as much tragedy and romance as Gone With the Wind, and enough characters to make three books or a heck of a TV miniseries.”

5The best book I ever read on early Texas history.  Dec 20, 2008
By Bookworm "Roy"
A long book that takes about three chapters to get interested in, but once you get into it, you can't put it down. You learn about amalgamation of whites and black in a period when supposedly it was verboten and you learn how drastic some white juries could be.

Especially intriguing was learning how life in civil war times was for civilians back home.

It is, to my way of thinking, the Gone With the Wind of Texas.

5Great family history and Texas history!  Mar 30, 2009

I have to admit I am kin to John Warren Smith, but it a fantastic book about what it was like to settle in Texas, try cotton plantations, and what was happening including the Civil War. And it is very factual, honest, and so interesting! Several people have borrowed our books or bought their own it is so good!

5Excellent Book!!!  Jan 26, 2009

My wife, Phyllis, is from the family (Smith) that this book is written about, and related to John Warren. Each year she goes to the family reunion, and I have listened to all the stories for the past 35 years. I am also BEST friends with Polly Ann (A WONDERFUL LADY that I adore!) who is Phyllis' cousin, so I know just a tad about this amazing family.
I am stunned that Phyllis' ancestors "Rode With Hood" because so did mine. It sure makes me wonder about the Cosmic Circle of Life, because I often wonder if they knew each other, fought beside each other and hated the Damn Yankees as much as my family did, and I still do!LOL
John Warren is an amazing writer, and although too damn LIBERAL for my taste, he is still a GREAT GUY!!LOL I am indeed proud to be married into this amazing family.
